Lifting struts

Postby Airspeed » Tue Apr 10, 2007 11:22 pm

Awhile back I saw a page on this forum that had some diagrams on different ways to install gas filled struts, I have looked and cant find it,anyone know where I can find that thread?
The force needed to lift the hatch at the mounting point of the strut ( about 20" from the hinge)is about 60 lbs, although the entire hatch weights about 40lbs. I was thinking of getting two 35 lbs struts but I am not sure if I should mount them so they push towards the hinge or away from the hinge. Can anyone point me towards the thread discussing these issues?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!! Aaron

Here is a thread that has all the links you'd ever need concerning the hatch:

This thread is probably the one you are looking for:

Just a guess, but you will probably need stronger struts than those due to the leverage. Maybe you can rig up a fish scale at strut mounting point. and measure it. I just got 2 150lb struts and called it a day. The 2 150lb struts are just strong enough, when it is cold they don't stay up. It all depends on where they are mounted.
