Math Trick

Postby halfdome, Danny » Fri Apr 13, 2007 5:34 pm

Here is a math trick so unbelievable that it will stump you.
Personally I would like to know who came up with this and why that person is not running the country. Grab a calculator. (you won't be able to do this one in your Head) Or try to solve it on paper.
1. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the Area code)
2. Multiply by 80
3. Add 1
4. Multiply by 250
5. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
7. Subtract 250
8. Divide number by 2

Do you recognize the answer ??

It's not that complicated. Look at it algabraically. Let x = the first three digits and y the last four.

1. x
2. 80x
3. 80x + 1
4. 20000x + 250
5. 20000x + 250 + y
6. 20000x + 250 + 2y
7. 20000x + 2y
8. 10000x + y

I tried it twice with the same answer. That number means nothing to me.

No, I trie my home number and the first digit of the last four numbers is 0. I think that screwed it up.

I know I am not the sharpest crayon in the box, but I also tried it twice and it means nothing to me.

Somebody better respond to what this is supposed to mean, cause this one is going to drive me batty over what I am doing wrong. Is this the number of brain cells I am killing off trying to figure out what I am doing wrong?

Are you adding or subtracting in step 7? It's easy to associate the 250 in step 4 with the 250 in step 7. It will work if you follow the directions exactly no matter how many zeros you have in your last 4 numbers.. :D Danny
