Benroy 8x5 Chassis

Postby Bruceaust » Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:05 am

I am in the design stages of building a "generic" Benroy. I was thinking of using 75mm x 25mm x 2mm RHS for the chassis. Is this overkill in strength? I will be building the chassis my self and not from a kit.

Well hello to ya Bruce, is it!

If I have that worked out right it is 3" x 1" x .07.

My first thought is that 1" isn't going to let you put bolts in the top (if you sit it with the 1 on top) but you can bolt to the side. That will be a waste of 3 inches in height.

Got a picture 8)

Actually, because it's so thin, this RHS (or, "rectangular tube" for Merkans) is only about 80% as strong vertically as the 2"x2"x1/8" (or 50x50x3mm) that most people use. I think it's still quite strong enough for an A-frame frame for an average weight trailer - 1" wide RHS is definitely not suitable for a single-tongue frame.

I typically think that 2" x 2" x .125" is a comfortable size. your 1" x 3" by .06" sounds a little thin.

But then again, you have to tell us more about what you are putting on top, because the body typically adds strength to the frame, ie a torsion box.

i reasoned that the higher profile will give a much stiffer structure. I will also use an A frame at the front with triangulated bracing etc. I intend to build a 18mm ply walled Benroy 2.4m x1.5m (8x5)

G'Day Bruce, I guess you're in Oz somewhere ;) 2.44x1.52 is closer to 8x4. I used 50x50x3 for my chassis and have had no probs with it. Are you building on or offroad? I feel that what you are proposing is a little light for our conditions.
Cheers
