A Lesson for New Builders Here

Postby Ira » Fri Apr 20, 2007 8:25 am

I have a brand-new window AC that I'm giving to Rusty today--a friend of Woody whom he's helping build his TD. It was used for 1 week while my main unit died in the house, and I have no use for it. (He's going to have the coldest TD in Florida--8,000 btus.)

The large black iron crab on my hatch was cut and powder-coated by Raul (Kai'sTear) who lives in Mexico. For free. I just gave him a Fedex number to use for shipping.

I sent two beautiful wicker and iron fish to the builder of that big Fish trailer. (Where did he go, and what was the name of that trailer?)

Mike sent me a great Budweiser sign that arrived when I was out of power--and out of BEER--during the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma.

And there have been countless similar examples and offers of "just pay the shipping and you can have it."

Pretty cool huh?

I've known one neighbor for years and the bastard never even offered me a Bud.

That's another reason why this forum is the greatest and the most encouraging and helpful people in the world of camping !!!

I had only been on this forum for a few months, and that was the August right after the first ITG , and the then active Chris C actually drove about 30 miles and dropped off two door / hatch handles he had won at ITG but wasn't interested in using.... same thing like Ira mentioned " If you can use it, pass it on to another teardropper...."

And then when tent camping at my first three or four teardrop gatherings, it's the same thing as Ira mentioned..... "here, use mine" " we're fixing lunch, want a burger?" "here, let me help you set up"

Same thing at my 2nd Jewel Box trip, in March to Beavers Bend. Six guys standing around " do you have anything to set up?" "Here, let me do that" ...etc....

THE BEST !!!!
Some things are way over my head !! ...but it keeps me looking UP!

My first trip in my tear was the IRG. I camped next to Paul and Norma and they were the best neighbors I could ask for. They shared everything (even their pizza). Everyone was very friendly. Joanne even cleaned my DO for me.

Ira, Thanks for posting this. In a world gone CRAZY, it's good to sit back and think of the really good things in life.

I know that finding this forum one of the best things I have ever done.

Now, instead of sitting and watching other folks do amazing things or build stuff I never thought I could, I am now one of those folks that "does" do and can build the impossible. Of course I did so with the encouragement and advice from the member of the forum. My life is better for it.

How about this. Our second gathering was Clinton Lake KS. We didn't have a teardrop so Rayvilian loaned us his Little Guy. How's that for teardropping hospitality? We had a great time and that really sealed the deal for us.

Oh yea, one guy sent out about 100 copies of his new magazine for free. And it didn't even have any ads in it (for some reason my copy smelled like beer, but I'm ok with that).

Come on, lets hear more stories.

Minden....05...my first "official" gathering....I drove 1400 mi. non stop, and flattened my springs....Gary (Rayvillian) was there to help me out when I swapped some taller shackles into it and he didn't know me from Adam....and as I recall, he also had a grease gun....I knew I was with a good bunch of people then....Doug

Ira... I couldn't agree more. One of the things I have learned in life: People who build things themselves... Teardrops, boats, hotrods, woodworkers, and other active "hands-on" hobbiests are the finest people in the world! Always willing to help their friends, give them freebies, pitch in and get dirty when necessary. I guess lazy couch-potatoe types are just not attracted to this type of hobby? I honestly don't think in 45 years of building things I have ever met an active do-it-yourselfer that wasn't a person of good character. :applause:

That's a fact! I was really surprised just how many people were willing to help us clean out those pesky ovens full of food. Gaston was even nice enough to supervise when we were doing dishes!!
