trim and doors

I am building an offroad camping trailer which will follow my truck around on trails.

Image

My camping trailer will have a steel 'cage' and plywood skin. I am 90% done with the frame and have several basic questions:

1. What is used to weather proof the plywood? paint and sealer?
2. What is used to seal the doors?
3. what kind of latch mechanism is used for the doors?
4. Windows?
5. Where is a good place to get this stuff? RV Supply? ( I am in Dallas Fort Worth)

If you are wondering what the suspension will be like here are some pics of my flatbed-offroad trailer. It uses full length truck springs and truck shocks. I see no need to go with offroad tires on the trailer as they just add resistance when towing and this trailer already has 12" of axle clearance. My finished trailer will have 30 gallons of water, 2 batteries which can be charged off the truck's secondary electrical system, a stereo, water heater (on the drawing board), and eventually a computer system that will interface with the truck's pc.

Thanks for your help.

Nice shock set up....what's the rating on the axle? I use epoxy to seal the plywood, but there are lots of options, check in the above header for Rich's list and sdtripper2's pages..lots of info on what you are looking for there...Doug

The playground is wide open. There are lot of answers to those questions. We do have a fee for questions and that is pictures. Since you have paid in advance... ;)

The axle is a 2klb axle with about 1200lbs of tires. The bow in the axle is normal and was like that when purchased. In hindsight I should have gone with a 3500lb axle. The tires are rated at 1800lbs each and they will probably move to the camping trailer due to their higher rating.

I will probably run a 3500lb axle with brakes for the camping trailer. I am hoping my trailer weighs under 1000 and around 1600 with tires installed.

Thanks

I'm interested to see what you go with as I plan to start on mine shortly and my tow vehicle isn't much different to yours.

The only thing I'm grappling with is the length, I'm thinking a 10' trailer as I want the extra room but am worried about the overhanging. I'm also going with offroad tyres for thier puncture resistance and flotation on sand etc + I have 5 wheels and tyres waiting for a project so I may as well use a couple of them.

Cheers

Your XJ will tow make a great tow rig. I have been helping my friend build up his black XJ and he is taking over the other offroad trailer to tow our offroad tires onroad :) Once I obtain another digital camera I will take pictures. Recently some uninvited individuals visited my truck and borrowed my work laptop and digital camera, they have yet to return them.
