Question on Oklahoma State Parks

Having never camped or spent time in OK, I know nothing about the state parks there. We'll be going to Minden for the T@B rally a few weeks after the ITG, and we were thinking of taking a different route back through KS and OK. So we just need an overnighter. But we still want to stay at a park that is enjoyable since we'll have the evening and early morning to enjoy. The four parks along our route are:

Okmulgee
Greenleaf
Brushy Lake
Lake Eufaula

Since the T@B is similar in needs to teardrops, which park would be your best suggestion for a place to hang our hats overnight? Since this will be the week of July 4th, I think we definitely need to make reservations.

I can help you with a couple of those. Greenleaf is a beautiful lake with good facilities. Don't be surprised to see a herd of deer wandering through the park. Only problem with Greenleaf is reservations. The upper level away from the lake takes reservations, but the campsites along the waterfront are first come, first serve. As for Lake Eufaula, it has nice campgrounds with facilities, and they take reservations. Nice lake although the water is never clear due to the sandy rivers feeding it. I'm not familiar with Brushy lake or Okmulgee.

I've been thinking of going to Okmulgee (Dripping Springs St Pk) around June 1 and could let ya know.... or I may get an urge to run away between now and then and could maybe check it out. I also had hoped to go to Lake Tenkiller , which is near Greenleaf this weekend but now not sure if I'll try it. It's supposed to pour down rain all week too ! rats!

I've camped at Okmulgee a few times. (It's been a year though)
Not a bad place to spend a day or two!!

Last time I stayed at Eufaula it also happened to be a weekend of a motorcycle rally.
Not that I don't like motorcycles........but they kept going all night long.

I called several of the parks, and it seems that it is hard to get a reservation at the state parks for this time, so I switched to looking at COE properties. There are three that have available sites for our dates: Strayhorn Landing, Petit Bay and Chicken Creek. Is anyone familiar with these, and is one better/nicer than the others? Or are they about the same? I know here in GA the COEs are all pretty much the same and are usually pretty good.

We decided that we may stay an extra night, and take in some of the Cherokee sites for a day, since hubby is a card-carrying Cherokee (3/4). He's already been to all the GA and NC Cherokee places for geneology, museums, etc. and the OK places would be new to him.

As to our route, we'll be coming down I-35 from Kansas, and will need to pick up I-40 to continue on to GA.

Those three .... Strayhorn, Petit Bay and Chicken Creek are all on Lake Tenkiller which is a nice , big lake... I camped several times (tenting) there, but not those particular campgrounds. I know you can book those on reserveamerica.com though... I was looking for booking there this weekend or this summer. IT's crappy that not all Oklahoma parks take reservations...

I really wanted to go out and stay somewhere on Tenkiller this weekend, but don't know ... it's raining all week long here but I'm dying to get away !!! haha I'll let you know if I go out there and I'll check those out.

We have Bluff Landing Corps of Engineers Park East of Broken Arrow OK (Near Tulsa). For fun we have a Bass Pro Shop in Broken Arrow)We would be glad to meet you and lead you to Bluff Landing. I also own land with very Primitive campsite north of Tahlequah, OK and 5miles west of the Illinois River (with good canoe trips).

Thanks all for your insights and suggestions! We now have reservations at Strayhorn Landing in site #5 for July 5th and 6th. We are going to stay the extra day to go do the Cherokee stuff. Anyone nearby is welcome to come by and hang out by the campfire!!!

I dont know about RV sites on Lake Tenkiller. But as a state park i always loved it. My family used to spend christmas at these cabins they rent out. Ten Killer has some real nice views!
