Dropped Floor (Afterthought/Retrofit) Build on my 4' wide.

Postby Nic » Sat May 05, 2007 1:58 am

I was asking about any ideas on fitting my camper with a drop floor/floorboard this late in the build. So today in about 3 hours i did just that. I retrofit my camper with a dropped floor/storage. Here are some pictures of what i got done today. I plan to have a veneer to make things look nicer. ANd as you can see in a couple pix i have brown carpet and padding on my floor. The bottom of my drop floor willl have that same carpet and padding with a nice wood veneer on the sides. Maybe even a hidden light that comes on when my door opens. And when im done adding things i plan to close in and seal the belly of the camper. More pix to come as i work on it over the weekend. My layout is not as most. I look forward to hearing what you guys think. As i have not posted many pix of my enterior.

All that, just for storage? You must be planning on taking a lot of IRON. :?

Seriously, storage is something that I never have enough of.

Nic,
Nice job on the floor. I have a dropped floor in mine but I haven't figured out exactly what to put in there. I like the little palm trees on the side of your trailer, it's a neat detail.

Are we there yet?

Heya Mike. Im not going to use all of it as storage all the time. The half at the door will always be a floorboard but the other half i want to be able to close and place a cushion over it for more seating. While towing to my camp site though i will pack that thing full! My chairs fold up just right for the space and my awning poles will fit well too.
Heya Scott... Thanks i got those palms for .25 at a fabric store where i picked up my headliner. I have a palm tree theme thing going on. When my floor is all done i will post a pick off that i plan to store in there. LOTS of stuff.

How deep is that?

How High is it from the ground?
(Looks to be about even with the axle...)

Good job Nic. I've thought about doing that too.

Great pics. Nice job.

From the pics, may I bring up something? Water treatment of the wood? I didn't see much of it. Also, you added soem 2x4 in the 'channels' of the frame crossmembers, why? It'll add weight more than anything else.

First off i would like to say that the first pic is for Mike. (note the socks and shoes) HAHAHA!!!!
Anyways here are some pix of my floor build. As you will see through the pix i have MANY things that look GHETTO!!! Thats due to not being a Millionaire and only having a couple tools to use in my build. Those ghetto things are things im working on. HAHA. Like my nightstand leg, and the real cool mix match couch cushions im using till i buy real foam. Anyways so over look some things please. Im not showing the back end of the inside because my cabinets are being re-built and the lay out is being changed to better work with my new floor and seating. I will tell you that the back end of the inside will only seat one and two up front. When ever i get that done i will catch you guys up. Hope you like my work.

OH!!! The cushions are not "in place" i have not built the supports for them or anything yet. Behind the front seats i will store my sleeping pillows and behind the rear seats i will have my bedding rolled up.

Very cool Nic. I like it. Doesn't the dropped floor really add to the whole experience though? I think all small campers should have them.

For sure Steve! Before i build the floor i thought the inside was fine. I had my little nightstand and had no need for a larger table or anything. But i have been known to have a FEW peoplein my camper. And settng indian style takes up too much room. Now when i open the door it feels more like a camper. Not just a bed on wheels. 8)

Yup, it's 12" deep. It measures 21 x 21 or something close to that. I don't store anything in there. It's an area that I can stand in so I can cook inside (which I've never done) or change clothes (which I do quite often). That's all it's used for, but it's one of my favorite things about the camper.

It's about 1" lower than my axle.
