Rick, I Googled "Chicken Riggies" and took a look at the recipe. That sounds really good. With the addition of the Pale Ale, I think you might have a winner there.

I could whip up some "Hoosier Jambalaya" during the week since I'll be there for six days. I might give the Riggies are try also.

I love pot luck dinners at gatherings. It ties everyone together.

Hey Dave call me in for a canoe/kayak tour group. I covered most of the area with Alan & Leslie,and by myself,and can put together a novice paddle tour. Maybe Alan & Leslie would be interested in being tour assistants.I can bring a tandem,and a solo canoe if anyone wants to join us. PFD's will be required,as well as appropriate water wear ,no exceptions{it's for your safety}. I have several adult sized PFD's if any are needed. I suspect the water will be much colder then normal this time of year,due to the cooler spring we are having. Please let me know how many are willing to do a tour of the lake,and if a novice,or experienced. Pace will be kept that a novice will have no trouble keeping up. Any canoe/kayak rental place near Fish Creek,Dave?

Joan asked if there is anyone interested in biking around the park,or easy trail,anyone know,interested?

As for pot luck ,Joan is planning to bring pickled red beet eggs,and shoo-fly pies{Pa dutch favorites}.

Anyone wanting to join the paddle group,and have questions for water wear,tour length,or need a PFD ,please PM me.

We are both looking forward to seeing old friends,and meeting new ones. See ya there.

As far canoe/kayak rental...

Hickock's Boat Livery which is located just outside the park on Route 30 is also located on one of the Fish Creek Ponds. They deliver canoes right to your campsite by water. You can stop in to see them, or call 518-891-3328 / 518-891-0480.

There is also a truck that drives through the park in the morning with a truckload of canoes. Just hail him and he will stop and assist you.

You can also rent canoes from the St Regist Canoe Outfitters who are located just north of the park in Lake Clear. Call 518-891-1838 or 888-775-2925 or email [email protected].

For sea kayaks (as well as canoes), you can contact Adirondack Outfitters in Saranac Lake. Contact them at 518-891-7450 or 1-800-491-0414.

We'll have bikes too. Maybe we can have an inform bike ride when the weather is good (oops shouldn't say that LOL). Rollins is great biking too, but is quite hilly.

Thanks Dave for the info. I don't remember a canoe truck, that's great ,maybe I can leave mine at home,and save some gas on the way up. I Googe earthed Fish Creek,but it's blurred out,and not clear enough to post a route over the area photo. I was hoping to give some idea where we were going. I'll reasearch more maps. 5 weeks and counting !

I've finally managed to scrape enough cash together to get my trailer started. I hope to have enough done to drag it to Fish Creek for the gathering .

Bill, Leslie and I will participate in your canoe/kayak tours. We are also willing to be "assistants", assuming that "assistants" are not required to tow anyone.

Following is a GPS track of the rainy day paddle with Bill, Leslie, and Alan two years ago. The highlight was a rainy lunch bobbing in the kayaks on, I think, Little Square Pond


Also a larger group made a paddle on Sunday by cartoppiing the boats to Rollins Pond, paddling back to camp, and then biking to pick up our cars.


If these pics are not readable because I had to reduce the file size for the forum album, I could give Dave some higher res versions for his website.

I have some other tracks for other paddles at Fish Creek or nearby if there interest. Abundance of paddling opportunites is one of the key attractions of the Adirondacks for us flatlanders from the Ohio cornfields.

Time is growing near. Really looking forward to seeing the old and new folks.

Hi Alan & Leslie,

Your map is much better then mine,so we can use yours as a general guide. If there are any newbys amongst us paddling ,we should keep the trip 5 miles or under. Do you know how long the Little Sq pond was round trip ? Advanced paddlers could do a longer trip,or venture into Upper Saranac lake.


As assistants you will be required to livery all boats,provide shuttle service,clean canoes, act as hosts on the trip with knowledge of historical ,and natural interests of the area. {just kidding}.

The only thing I think we would have to do is help people with getting in the boats,and giving minor paddle instructions,and just watching out for them,depending on the skills of the paddlers. We could split newbys,and advanced. We can work that all out once interest is shown in the lake tour. If no interest in the canoe tour ,I plan to head into Upper Saranac lake up to Dry island,and Saranac Inn.

Bill, the round trip from campground #198 to west end of Little Square Pond with side trip to Copperas was 7.6 mi per GPS.

It is 4 mi roundtrip to Copperas from near our sites this year:


Another similar trip is out under the highway bridge, up spider passage (I think it is called) into Follensby Clear Pond. There are several nice islands at the south end of Follensby. We can get back to Fish Creek via an easy (flat) carry of about 1/4 mi. Total loop is 3.7 mi including the carry.

The trip can be extended north in Follensby for folks who might like to paddle more.

I'll make some more routes from the GPS software. I just got a new notebook computer with Vista - taking me a bit longer with my slow learning curve.

Assuming that the "assistants" perform all the the listed tasks satisfactorily, will the tour leader provide refreshments for all back at the camp???

At this point you guys should be the leaders,and I'll assist,with all the good info you provided. Are you using your computer as a GPS,or downloading from the GPS? I must learn how to do that. My GPS has an old serial port,and my computer has only USB ports{got to find the manual}.Those trips look doable for all that want to join. Thanks!

Anyway, what do you guys drink,I'll be sure to have some at the end of the trip. If wine I can bring some of our private stock. Dry,semi dry, semi sweet, sweet,white,red,rose',import,domestic.

You got the trips planned,now all we need are paddlers.

Sorry to let teardropping digress to "geeking".

I made the maps from MapSource, which is a program which came with the Garmin TOPO US maps (on 3 CD's) which I bought two years ago. I can download the maps -approx 100MB worth at one time to the GPS before I travel. For example, for the Tearup I will load Ohio, Northern PA, NY, Mass, RI, & CT to cover our intended itinerary. Works good for hiking, biking, paddling, and driving.

Then from MapSource, I can download "tracks" which the GPS stores. For intended routes, you can draw "routes" on the maps. My first post was tracks from two years ago; the second post was routes which I drew last night. The software calculates the distance. The second posts are better probably because I updated to a newer version of MapSource from Garmin

I'll work on some more routes into Saranac Lake, etc. I have hit wind and waves on previous ventures into Saranac. We will most likely paddle every day - weather permitting (or even not permitting!). We are happy to take a route acceptable to all participants on a given day.
