The rally is next weekend May 18-20, visitor planned for 11AM on Sat. I expect to be there before then. (I had to go check old E-mails for Dayton's name  "

Here is one of the pictures from 1937.

Image

They look a lot alike but this photo does not have as many windows as the first one. Maybe they are relatives and this was the low cost version.

This photo belongs to my friend who does not want to see it all over the internet. She was good enough to let me post it here, please respect her wishes.

Thanks

Dennis, it looks like the same trailer but smaller. Look at the front window. I need to check when Airstream started up. I'm sure they built some before the 40's.

Gage, to me it looks like the B&W photo is of a different trailer -- the one at the start of the thread definitely has a side window by the door, and I'm not seeing it in this pic.

They definitely look like they came from the same manufacture, though.

Laredo, do you ever read a post complete? My very first line read "Dennis, it looks like the same trailer but smaller." In other words. Same mfg, different model. Which also means not the same trailer.

Maybe my post was to long and by the time you got to the end, you couldn't remember what I said in the beginning.

Airstream started in 1936 after the Bowlus company filed bankrupcy in that same year. The first couple of trailers still looked exactly like the Bowlus but with the Airstream name. Then Airstream moved the door to the side and that changed the look to there own. Until the Argosy came out.

What's a post complete?

Gage, I thought you meant the photo was smaller -- or the trailer appeared more distant in the photo.

My plan for the day was to collect my friend with old photo album and head to the Newport Beach Vintage trailer rally. Seemed to be a perfect day ahead, then the phone call. Her ancient cat was wobbly and maybe on its last legs, she was staying home.
Okay, so I headed to Newport Beach solo, no problems, until I got close to the site. Apparently there is a big jazz festival all day and right across the road. Being Newport and the land of $$$, the RV place hiked their parking rates to $25!!!
I was hoping they were just trying to keep their parking lot from being overcrowded with Jazz fans. I pulled up and played the
"vintage trailer rally" card. $25 please. For the the old trailers?? Yes. I said no thanks and headed back home. I have seem many of these trailers before and was really there to socialize but not for $25.
On the good side, I got home to phone call and a new prospect is coming by to see the teardrop I am selling.:)

I am happy I was not there if and when Gage pulled up and they asked for $25. It is a very long drive, well over 100 miles, for him and he might have exposed his dark side.

For that $25 I could have spent the night at Guajome park, site of Spamboree, and gone in to San Diego and seen vintage trailers free.

Sorry I missed my friends though.

Yep, yep, yep. Sorry, I though you knew about the $25 parking. I should have said something. I was at the first one down there and the following year I went down with the '56 and the Dalton just to drive thru and say hi to friends. He, he, they let me right in, no parking fee. The Jazz Festival and high parking fee has been that way from the getgo. Well, did you have a nice drive down there?

P.S. I don't have a dark side. Everything is out in the open all the time. ;)

Last year I missed it almost entirely and did not show up until noon on Sunday when everyone was leaving but parking was cheaper if I had stayed.
I did not know about the Jazz festival and the parking fee did catch me unawares. If it was my rally and I really wanted to show off trailers it would not compete with the jazz festival. Time for a new site, maybe along San Onofre where we can all get "lit" up from Dos Tetons.

Main complaint is that my time would have been better spent at the Torrance Armed Forces Day parade and no fees. :D

Had I known about the "trailer pass" I might have tried that one.
The drive was very nice, both ways. Weekend traffic on the 405 in the AM is almost pleasant. And my teardrop prospect should be here any time now.

Getting home early by not staying at the Rally was a small blessing.

Let me introduce Rue, the new owner of Duffy's Cavern. With that nice smile, we were destined to make a deal
A pocket of cash helped some too. :D
