Anyone familar with the Alturas, California area?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Assessed value and market value are two completely differently things. The market value of my house is 400K+, but the assessed value is 180K. Good for me. We also have a limit on how much they can increase the value per year. I bought the lot we built on and didn't claim too much for the improvements so I got lucky. On the down side, assessed value of 180K = $3,800 in property taxes. $>

Thanks for all the info..... it looks like I'll be :hammer: with taxes no matter where I go in the "desirable" west....

Maybe I'll have to reconsider moving down with the 'gators and snakes! :scratchthinking:

It really makes me wonder how "new" people moving into CA, OR, WA can afford to own a home! (...especially fixed income geezers like myself!)

For a while I was giving serious thought to moving down to northern AR around Bull Shoals... Just in terms of "affordability" I may have to give further consideration to the tornado/humidity zone! :fan:

Move to Detriot, Michigan. I hear houses are selling cheap, as low as $2,500 dollars for a 3 bed room and 2 bath house. But the cheap ones I think probably needs some work but I think you could get a nice one for $25,000. I guess the reason the houses are so cheap is there is no work, but if you are retired that is not a problem. Detriot, Michigan is probably is not country living. I never been there so don't know.

...for some contrast...I live inna 60yrold home, 3br/2ba, attached 2 car port, a planked wall, brick veneer exterior, 2300sqft heated/cooled...200grand would get you this house(or one similar), located on 3.75 acres w/full utilities and my property taxes run around $680 bucks...that's right, six hundred and eighty bucks for both state and local taxes...oh yeah, we are in the city limits, so we have full city services as well...

AJ...the Bull Shoals/Mountain Home areas are one of my favorites in Ar...when I got married back in 2000, we spent a week onna houseboat floating on Bull Shoals...give it some serious consideration...might be a bit warmer than you want but it is certainly more affordable......

Arthur - I've driven through the Detroit area in years past.... NO THANKS!

MJ - That area of Bull Shoals/Mountain Home has piqued my interest for some time now.... it sure looks great in many ways! (..except for the heat... but maybe that's why there's beer and boats! :FNP )

Could also :vroom: off to the mountains during the worst time of the summer ;) Being on the "road system" would make that pretty easy, although I'd prolly have to start driving FASTER or I'd get shot!

AJ...ever been to that area...well off the "big" roads with a lotta twisty, 2lane mountain type driving(grades are a lot shorter) so hi-speed driving is not needed...

...you definitely are in the "montains" such as the Ozarks are and while it can get plenty hot in the summer, you also get lotssa breaks w/milder weather...in the winter, you still have almost half a day of light and even though it will get cold, wait a week of so and it should be mild(er) again...tornadoes...ya pays ya money and ya takes ya chances...

p.s....the wife(and I...sorta)decided long ago that if we ever moved from here, that area would be the #1 choice.......MJ

Been kinda in the area. A buddy and I bought a couple of motorcycles down in Hattisburg and rode them back up here in '01. Just south of Memphis we cut up to I-40 then west thru OK. We didn't get off the big hiways all through there. (got my Kaw 750 up to 118 once... just to see!)

It does seem like brick would be best construction (...for all the huffin and puffin of the tornadoes... maybe a "spider hole" too?) what is best for heat/cool? heat pump? natural gas? .... yadda yadda.

Looks like (from demographics...) that Bull Shoals has a low crime rate... and LOTS OF GEEZERS!!

...traditional wood and stone construction are popular in the area...cabin style stuff...tornadoes are an act of the weather gods...ya can't really worry about 'emm...just duck...being a mountainous area, tornadic activity usually skips onto the nearest trailer park in the flatlands ;)
