the wife and i were thinking about buying some land in the middle of no where that is totally off grid build a little cabin and have enough room for a landing strip so we can fly there and get away for the weekend but trying to find that much clear land around here or trying to build a runway even just of dirt in the middle of no where when you cant get any kind of large equipment in there proved more work then we wanted to deal with

very interesting site but most of the fields that it lists in my area are either condos now or not really away from people but i think i will have to read threw it and see what else there is within a few hours flying from me thanks

Solar souds great to me, but economically it sure looks like all you are doing is pre-paying your PG&E bill for a lot of years even after the rebates.

If it was a great deal, you'd see all the shopping center developers filling the roofs of Home depot and walmart with panels. When we see that, I suspect it will be time to put them on our roof.

If your goal is do do something that makes you feel good about the environment, and you can afford it, consider it your own personal carbon offset.

My total knowalage of solar is that it comes from the sun, so I am willing to take a stab at the price. I say $30.000 to $38.000 installed.

We asked for a WAG from the salesman before he had a chance to run the numbers and it was about half of that. We'll have to see what he comes up with for a real estimate, then compare that to our electric bills of the past ten years. We are also going to have an energy audit done by a friend that is in the business. Time will tell.

This is what I did to reduce my electric and natural gas expenses.
I stopped using my central air by learning how to move air through the house and closing the the house up prior to the extremely hot days.
I have acclimated myself to greater temperature swings which allows me to keep the heat off longer into the winter and earlier in the spring.
I use a solar dryer for my clothes, I hang them on a line, outside in the warmer weather and to add moisture in the basement during the winter.
I wash my clothes in cold water. I take quick short showers.
I turn things off. The TV and/or radio use to play constantly but now I rarely watch TV and have learned to love the quiet. I enjoy sitting outside in the evening and listening to the trees sing as the wind moves through them.
I keep a large frozen ice block in the refer's freezer and open only when I know what I am getting. I don't plan supper with the refer door open.

I continuely consider ways to reduce my expenses and simplify my way of living. Obviously this is based on individual desires but significant reductions can be done by reassesing use.
