Folding Dinghy

Postby Dee Bee » Sat Jun 02, 2007 10:35 am

Some time ago a post was listed asking the question, "What else have you built?"

I posted that I had built an African Ashiko:

But my latest project is a folding dinghy. I know it sounds like nonsense. And I bet the first question is how does it fold and keep the water out?

Bill Weller is the designer of the plan. Check out his web site:

Any way, in keeping with going small I thought it would be great to be able to take a small boat along with the Zephyr I built

I know there is a TD that has a boat hull on the top of the roof. That's OK but it wouldn't fit with the Zephyr that I already have...

I bought Bills plans and started building the Barquito (little Boat).
I have the bottom of the hull finished Image

Read the info on my web if you want to know about how it folds, etc.

Dear Dee Bee,

I saw this folding portable boat at an RV show about three years ago and posted about it. It was really sturdy.

Dee Bee that's an excellent website and a nice build ya got going. 8) Will eagerly follow your progress as things progress.

A folding dinghy is quite appealing. I built a 15.5 foot pirogue from Uncle Johns, and after installing some flotation compartments and stuff, it's getting too heavy to comfortably cartop. :(

I have been reading up on this kind of stuff, I need a small , ( LIGHT ) boat . something I can carry by myself, for at least a few hundred feet . to get from the road or bridge to the river, and something small enough to get into places a bigger boat can't . this might be just what I need.

Dee-Bee, That is fascinating and awesome!! I read through your whole barquito build page and I can not wait to see the end result. :applause:

Nice shop BTW. That will be my next project. To build a shop/shelter for the TD. I got to have my carport back.

I am almost ready to put the Barquito in the water for the first float!

Just need some oars...

Homemade Oars

Postby Dee Bee » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:38 pm

Today I made a pair of very basic oars for my little boat.
I hope to get her hull wet in September. I needed a way to get around on the water. Manufactured oars seemed expensive, so I made a pair. The experts will see that they are very simple. But I think they will work out just fine for $20. in cost.
