Disapearing "Watched" Auctions On Ebay...

Postby Dean in Eureka, CA » Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:33 am

Anybody ever have this happen???
Last week I was "watching" an auction on a certain item and POOF!!!... It was GONE!!!
I inquired Ebay as to what caused that and they told me my Cookies or Cache was full. (It wasn't that)
I found another auction for the same earlier this week and tonight I went to check on it and it too has vanished from record.
It's not on my watched list...
It's not on the search list...
It's not on the completed items list either...
It's simply gone without a trace and both auctions were not buy it now auctions...
:x :x :x :x :x :x :x

The items that vanished?... Griswold Heart Waffle Iron Salesman/Toy Size.

Dean,

I have had several auctions that I was watching and/or bidding on dissappear. Sometimes the seller pulls the auction, claiming that the item is no longer availible for sale (someone offered them a better price off line?). We bought a Petcool on ebay last fall, and 2 weeks after the sale (and after we made payment), the seller claimed that the item didn't work, and cancelled the auction (yes, we got our money back). I'm sure that she was unhappy with the selling price, and just used this as an excuse to get out of selling it to us.

Just last week, a pizza oven that I was bidding on disappeared within a couple of hours of the end of the auction. Ebay sent us a notice that the auction had been pulled, and the seller had been suspended (no other information was availible). This has happened several times to recent pizza oven auctions (at least 2 that I was bidding on, and a few I was watching), and I assume that there is someone out there that is trying to scam buyers. It usually happens to a seller that has little or no feedback. In several of the auctions the pictures appeared the same, but the location varied around the country. I don't worry too much about getting ripped off on an oven, because I would be picking up the oven myself, and would not make payment until I physically inspected the oven. However, on a smaller item that would be shipped, I would make sure that I paid for it with something like PayPal, or a credit card, so there is some type of protection to me in case the seller tries to scam me.

YEP!!!

It happened to me when I FIRST started building the crab:

It was a HUGE wood carved statue of a crab--like 3 feet wide--and totally 3-dimensional like a statue (not a plaque). I watched it like CRAZY, and a few hours before end time...poof.

I hope the guy chokes on that stupid crab.

Did your customers burn the place down after you served your first pie with mayo?

Ira,
Funny you should ask, because that's where I learned that secret about using mayo.
Nope they didn't burn the places down, but they sure gave the pizza ovens a workout. and fattened up my buddy's bankrole.

Yaa... I learned enough secrets about pizza from him, should I ever decide to do a pizzeria of my own it would do very well.
Sadly, he died shortly after I quit. He left all his pizzerias to his teenage son. The kid "played" with them for about a year and sold out... Had visions of being a rock star.
I'd be happy to share some of the other secrets with yaa, but since you've become the King of Mayo Mocking... I'll have to pass. :R

I've heard that in a typical New York pizzeria, the ingredients for an entire cheese-only pie cost like a buck and a half . Yeah, this was a while ago, but even so...

Putting gas/fuel and other expenses aside, could all of the ingredients be THAT cheap?

The ingredients are cheap. The overhead and labor are not.

Cheap Pizza

1 cup warm water (we'll call that free)
1 Tablespoon yeast (pennies)
1 teaspoon sugar (more pennies)
1 teaspoon salt (very cheap)
2 1/2-3 cups flour (even flour is cheap)

a can of tomato sauce (pretty cheap)
cheese (this is the expensive stuff)
mushrooms (middle of the road expensive)
onions (pretty cheap)
peppers (pretty cheap, especially if you use green)

So the pizza dough is cheap, and the toppings cost a little more!

And if you make a straight cheese pizza like Ira said, I can see how it's not expensive at all.

Mike...

P.S. But if you're over 50 (40 for women) watch out for your waist line!

P.P.S. There, did that finish the hijack? Sorry Dean!

Who the heck wants a cheap pizza anyway???
My pizzas have only the finest of meats, select chesses, choice vegetables, special flour and other secret ingrediants.

Round Table just came out with this Smoke House Special...
There was this huge life size picture in an advertisemnt insert in my newspaper... I was hungry, busy, tired and had the kids, so I figure what the hey...
What a piece of crap!!!
Get this... I paid with a bank card over the phone when I ordered that beauty... Was told the transaction was approved.
The delivery guy shows up at the house and tells me he needs to see my card so he can "run" it. I told him it had already been "ran" over the phone and had been approved... He didn't care.
I couldn't have the pizza which was hiding in the box until he "ran" my card right there at my front door.
You see... I'm a pretty easy going guy, but these days with all the identity theft crap going on, I'm thinking this delivery just wants the rest of my numbers from the card, because on the receipt that he already had, all the numbers were X'd out except the last four.
I reluctantly handed the card over to him and he lays it up against the side of my building, lays a piece of carbon paper over it and runs the side of a pencil over it....
After dinner (We ended up giving half of that pizza to the dogs) I drove into town with both "receipts" and had a little pow-wow with the manager of the place.
He pretty much matter of factly told me that's how Round Table does it.
I told him I felt that it was bad practice and leaves the door too far open for a dishonest employee.
I told him he wouldn't have to worry about it happening again... I also told him that was my last Round Table pizza I'd ever buy.
Whew!!! I'm sure glad Jeff's into the Domino's deal instead.
Hey they even have Micheal Waltrip as a spokesperson.
Notice, I didn't say race car driver... :laughter:
(Sorry Jeff)

BTW- If anyone here owns a Round Table, please don't get mad... Heed my words and make some changes.

JunkMan, If you pay for an eBay item via Paypal you are protected. I am a seller as well as buyer on eBay. I did not receive an item after many weeks and finally filed with Paypal. Received item ( too late for gift). It is good to know if you pay through Paypal you are protected.

Dean, I know that sellers pull auctions at the last minute if the price is not to their liking. I think eBay does not tollerate that at all. If I list an item that I might close early it is because the item is for sale locally. I then tell in my listing that I reserve the right to end auction early as it is for sell locally.

Dean:

I can tell this really does get under your skin~

In doing some research on this practice of disappearing eBay items while
the auction is still going on you might try these suggestions.

Spotting and Reporting Abusive Non-Selling Sellers
If this happens to you, and you've bid on an item that simply disappears,
check it out. If you find the seller does this chronically, report it to eBay's
Trust and Safety customer service or go to the eBay home page and chat
live with an eBay representative to find out for sure if what the seller is
doing and saying is up to par with eBay's rules. (It isn't). There are certain
eBay criteria for ending an auction early. Not liking the price the bidders
offer is not one of them. So the scamming seller tells eBay untruths.
Apparently eBay is not aware that the same scamming seller is doing this chronically.

You are absolutely right bledsoe... I ran a Pizza Hut store quite a few years ago... Our food cost ran around 21 - 22%. I do contracting work now for Huddle House chain... Food cost: 18 - 21%. Also, Golden Corral steak houses... Food cost: 32% mostly because they have a big food bar and include fairly expensive meats & seafood.

Pizza is dirt cheap to make and very profitable indeed.
