Thanks MadJack will do!

Ira: Thanks, I was too lazy to make a pattern so just took a pencil and swoop there it is... :) being a artist did help. I had several pics around to refer too but not real sure which one it is closest too.

and Scott...hmmm yeah I think so. I laid out some ideas with my wife last night and think I have a go. I will post the process of that once I get started. Besides the idea of the deductions was just way too tempting.

Nice profile!! Not you silly...the tear! When I started drawing tears I didn't worry about ellipse points and such, I just "swooped" profiles that looked good to me. (then I build a squared off box...go figure)

You certainly hit on a nice one! I look forward to seeing the progress. On a different thread of course.

Hi Ken & Noel! Man, I'm glad to see ya'll putting this together. Ron told me about your project and blog, so I've been following along. You know there are about a half dozen teardrops in the Amarillo area now.

I've seen your work Ken, so I really look forward to seeing this trailer come along. We'll have to get together at one of the canyons or lakes sometime, fire up a dutch oven, and compare power tool disasters.

Trailer Decision

Postby sleepercatcher » Thu Jun 14, 2007 8:32 am

Nice build blog,
Did you know the trailer manufacturer? If not, how did you locate one. The harbor freight trailer looks O.K. I'm just wondering if a better trailer is available from a local source/manufacturer.

SC,

What do you mean by "better"? I'd say yes if you need to accommodate specific frame measurements or support spacing or if you need/want specific features like electric brakes or such. I'd say no if you're worried about the basic structure being sound; once you get to the point where the base trailer does the job it's intended to and does it without failing it's hard to define the next step as being "better" except to meet specific requirements (which are different for everyone).

I was going with a custom built until the Harbor Freight 1800 went on sale for $299. I decided I could live with the frame dimensions without having to mess with the desgin of the TD too much. If (when?) I do another TD I may well go with a custom built but it'll be to get torsion suspension, electric brakes and a specific frame layout. Shoot, for that matter, I could still install that axle I want on the HF 1800 trailer I bought and still be way under what I would have spent for the custom trailer. So I guess in the end, for me at least, it comes down to frame layout and specific design requirements. Now if I could weld...that'd be a different deal altogether.

Thanks man,

Yes I did know the manufacturer. He has been a customer of mine and vice versa for about 10 years now. I do beleive he gave me a decent deal on it and He would (I think) do so for just about anyone.

Youngs trailer service, Amarillo, Texas. Contact: Pat

He's always done me right when I've needed somthing. His crew was pretty excited about the whole teardrop thing so I'm anxious to return it back to his shop to show it off.

I really wanted the torsion supension but was impatient. I had discussed it with the builder a couple times and it slipped through the cracks. It dawned on me after the fact. They would have swapped it out on request but I decided to stick with it. Trailer sits a bit tall but I think it will be fine when done.
