Any Piano Tuners Here?

Postby SkipperSue » Fri Jun 22, 2007 1:25 pm

I have gotten into piano tuning, something I've been
wanting to try for a long time now. I was just wondering
if any of yall here did the same. I bought an old 1940 model Jesse Church and Son's
Piano a few weeks ago, fair shape; and have gone
through just about all the keys so far, but my electronic
tuner is having a hard time "hearing" the very high and low notes.
One of the websites suggest an aditional contact microphone
to get those.

One of my drinking buddies (I have many) owns Boca (Raton) Steinway.

I'll be seeing him later and I'll ask.

I've done my own a couple of times, and my sisters once, wow it was bad.
My other sis bought me a good book on the subject which I've skimmed.

I use a regular mic on my tunre and get it close into the strings.

Still it can't register the real highs and bass notes well, so I have to use the ears for those. In music class I was once subjected to pitch discernment tests, and did well I was told, so I guess that helps.

Keep my own close enough for the kids to practice on without hurting my ears. :-)

He didn't show yesterday Skip while I was there--which is a first for him--but I'll ask on Monday.

No way he misses two weeksdays in a row,

What kind of tuner are you using ??? Most standard Guitar type tuners have a hard time with anything Lower or higher that the E's of a guitar , unless you have a good Strobe Tuner it might be tough to get in perfect tune.... but....... where theres a will......... well, you know.

That's the tuner I got, as recommended by a piano tuning website.
It works great till you get to the real low and very high notes.
A "contact" microphone was suggested if you have trouble getting everything
tuned.

Still, I've really enjoyed this new adventure. Makes me wish I'd gotten into this years ago.

Skip, I spoke to my friend, and he says there could be a bunch of reasons for the problem you're having. His FIRST guess was the tuner you're using, but he just doesn't know without asking 50 other questions:

Because basically, on any piano, you should be hitting the low and high keys hard enough for the strings to register on the tuner. He said go here, the Piano Technicians Guild...that you'll find the answers you seek:
