Is there anyway that I can get away from the idea of my IP going via Holland? Should I be concerned about this?

no Heikki...EVERYBODIES IP skips thru servers all over the place...in your case, a large portion of Yurps internet traffic goes thru Amsterdam...'cause that is where the main servers are...why...'cause the server all like red lights ;)

Todah, a bot(in this case) is a cyber robot that trolls the internet looking for email addresses and other links that can be used by spammers and other nefarious doers of no good...

most of the time bots can be greatly slowed down on a forum by disabling guest access and requiring admin approval of there first couple posts

are the bots just phising the site for info or are they trying to post adds and other crap

D, we long ago implemented scripts to keep th bots from registering/posting to the forum...right now guest are prohibited from any postings and restricted from looking at pics(a motivation to register)...this is a new wave of bots, apparently powered by some new software (XRumer) that no scripts or mods are available for as of right now and they are apparently on phishing expeditions, looking for email and other links to exploit.....

Lynn...let me reiterate, that NO ONE will ever get banned from this board without a WHOLE bunch of just cause and a bunch of counseling with the admins...YOU WILL NEVER GET BANNED WITHOUT NOTIFICATION AND COUNSELING...we have gone thru these periods in the past and sonner or later a fix or mod will appear to alleviate this problem....
madjack 8)

p.s. I think it speaks volumes for this board, that since it's inception, the number of folks who have been banned could be counted on one hand...even if the hand was missing a finger or two.......MJ

As an old out-of-touch woodworker, things like: bots, bandwith, IP members, java skript, php code, and Yurps make my head hurt. Sure glad Madjack has a handle on all this stuff and all we have to contend with is enjoying our little camping treasures. Thanks for the efforts and keep up the good work.

Roly  :applause:

ahh those are the real fun ones

yea besides what you are all ready doing the only thing you can do is remove guest access all together which most places dont want to do as it detracts from initial interest of the site

p.s. it seems xrumer is a auto submission program made by botmaster and is also a licensed program that relys on there central servers
you can go here http://www.botmaster.net/contacts/ to report someone using there product in a abusive manor

D...another big source, that has just shown up recently, is from a comapny called INKOTOMI, which has recently been bought up by Yahoo...I have read complaints about them on other bulletin board forums as well....

You need to upgrade login security.... We experienced this on another board which I am a partner on and with a more difficult recognition (code - image generator) we effective killed spam bots that have figured out how to login to phpBBS... Banning dynamic IP address is a exercise in futility.... You can slam THEIR door on them, you have to limit who can come through YOUR front door

Dale, we have instituted login/registration security a plenty, that is not where the problem lies...the problem lies in the "guests" realm...and we really can't stop guests without stopping all new membership......

It is getting harder to keep them out. I still get a few registering even after I required names, addresses, birthdates and the security letter blocks. There aren't as many now tho.
I seem to get the Yahoo bot as a guest a lot but the most frequent one is Googles'. I have found it in at least a dozen forums at one time.
Stopping guests is definitely a bad idea, limits interest too much and cuts down on legitimate members joining.
Seems like all you can do is keep beating them back.
Hopefully someone will come up with some code that will chase them away before long.
I've been told to get rid of the phpBB and go to a pay forum like vBulletin but when you are running a free site that is usually not an option.

Put "guests" in read only mode....

If one is not logging in they can not do anything but "read"......

We are running exact same software and are not having any problem...

You have to remember most "guests" are scans for SEARCH engines interrogating site for information.......... But that is generally a read only........
