Outer Skin Installed

Postby SkipperSue » Fri Jun 29, 2007 8:20 am

I finally got the outer skin installed. :R
I used Liquid Nails as the adhesive and used my air nailer.
I first attached it at the bottom front of the trailer and then
ran the ratchet straps over it and begain to crank down on
it slowly and evenly. I sat four elevator test weights across
the top to help in holding it down while I nailed it in place.
Those weights are 50 pounds each! Heavy to lift up there. :?
Everyone is right about the front adding alot of strength,
it's as hard as a rock! I used the 1/4" luan as my skin.

Excellent work Skipper! That's what we did too, but it took the two of us to get it on and ratcheted down and stuff...I don't see how you did it by your self!!!

This Teardrop building is definately a two person job!!! I think!
Thanks for the update! You're getting there!!! Will we see you at the Last Gasp in Colorado?

Thanks Lynn. :)
I guess I forgot to mention my better half Sue in all this, I took
2 of the straps and she took the other 2 and we cranked them
down together. :R

My roof top vent came yesterday and I can't wait till this week end
to get back at it. I had hoped to be finished by the 4th of July but it
ain't happening. Every year for the past 25 years or so a bunch
of us old high school buddies get together and camp at the
North Saluda river. One of my buddies has some property there
on the river. I wanted to show up this year and have the TD to show off. :R

Thanks everyone :D

Mary K, I don't think it would be possible to get that bend
without those ratchet straps!

I would take it out to the campout next week if I allready
had the hatch and doors on, but it seems like every year
it comes down a big rain, bugs are allways around there too.
I still havn't installed a tow hitch on the Volkswagon yet either,
I would have to use the old Mercedes Benz to tow it with. :R

Skip when you started the skinning of the ply did you use glue or screws at all? Or was it plain glue?

I have the same similar straps now as you show in the photos.. I purchased 6 of them puppies since they didnt cost much..

I just need to find a place in front of our tear to tie them down to..

Howdy Heikki, :D

I used a construction adhesive called "Liquid Nails". I'm not exactly
sure what it's made of but if you get it on your clothes it will not come
out! :R I first applied the Liquid Nails to every area that the skin
would come in contact with. Then Sue and I (gotta remember to include
her :R ) placed the skin to the bottom and shot a few nails in to keep
it in place. Then I added the holding board and clamps to that. Then we
put the ratchet straps on and begain to tighten it down. After we got it all
tight I started shooting the nails to it. I used a 1/8th" diamater 3/4" long
air brad. I love the air nailer/stapler, I have owned that tool several
years and this project was the first time I have used it. :D
No screws were used at all! I left the straps in place for about a week and a half to make sure the Liquid Nails was compleatly cured.

Wowee.. Yup I know of a Sika Product here thats similar.. get it on ya and its there..to stay..

I guess I better be nice to the other half too so I can get her to help me on the skin also..  Maybe I should look into a small nailer as well.

Thanks again

Here's the air nailer/stapler that I got. I like this one
because it can use the little nails or staples!

Does that use a compressor or electrical direct? I found a nailer here that works on our household current..

Heikki, I have an electric, and found that you have to put pressure on the top of the gun when shooting or the nail will not set below grade as it were.. In other words use both hands on the gun. Just an FYI.. ;)
