Tip #1:

Buy a lot of beer, and listen to Gage.

Yeah, I bought the beer, but I didn't listen.

Jason,

First, welcome to the maddness...I mean forum. Second, don't listen to Ira no matter what you do...he's always had too much beer to make any sence at all, so we have all learned to live with that.

I would suggest studying the build plans on the Generic Benroy available for free on this site. Then, take some time and cruise thru the subjects that interest you in the forums, and you will learn a lot about building a teardrop. Keep in mind, however, don't pay any mind to Ira's posts. :D

Image to the playground Jason. Hard to tell which of the teardrops were home build isn't it. I would say most. Best starting place is to get familiar with the forums and the plans in the menue above. Many of the pictures in the Hall of Fame have build documentation with them.

We are not all professional woodworkers but we build with the help and advice of the group. We all contribute in one way or another. Our favorite way to contribute is with :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: Helps keep the bubble oil level. 8)

Enjoy

Welcome Jason, you have come to the right place. I knew nothing about building a teardrop before I started mine, but got loads of info from fellow teardroppers I found on the message board. I suggest that you try to attend a teardrop get together or Gathering that is within driving distance. Everyone is invited to wander down through the campsites and ask questions.

These TD folks are the friendliest campers you will ever find. Also, checking and studying the many construction pics will give you lots of tips on what size and shape your teardrop will be. Remember, when you do get it finished, it will take an hour to gas up your car, due to so many lookie-loos in the gas station. You have been warned! Now, get started with that build, and take lots of pics..........we just love pics.

Roly, the li'l ol' woody builder......ME

Welcome aboard, Jason!

Keep looking at the build photos, keep following links, and keep reading the forum threads and it will start to make some sense. At the top of every page there are links for a host of things including the Generic Benroy plans, Rich's List, a link to Andrew's web site (Design Library), and more. It'll take a bit of reading but there a bunch there.

Have fun...

Jason, let me REALLY set you straight:

First, Steve lives in Texas, and with the exception of all of the other Texas members here, this clearly shows a severe lack of judgment. He either inherited the house from mom and dad, or married a woman of real substance and property.

Second, if you review his avatar depicting his TD, you'll see that he made an attempt to position his axle 36" from the rear of the frame, as most of us do.

However, blowing up this avatar to 500%, you will CLEARLY see that he totally screwed up--and that axle is in fact 35 1/2" from the rear. This 1/2" variance can be fatal, and shows you the kind of man he is:

A DANGEROUS man to take advice from.

Do so, and you very well may die from his atrocious building advice.

Listen to me and the WORST that can happen is water dripping on your head during the night.

It's your choice, okay?

HAH!!!!! HAVING FUN YET, JASON!?

WELCOME!!!!

Jason, Welcome to the playground.
First thing bring your sense of humor because hopefully as you can already tell by a few of the posts to your thread, people like to joke around a lot & have fun.
Second as someone else already said read through the generic Benroy, link at top of page, to get the general idea. There are all sorts of variations, but first get the general concept of how they are built. That helps a lot.
Third do lots of reading & browsing through the old posts. At the top of the page is a search link. Very helpful if you're trying to read about a particular subject.
Fourth ask lots of questions as you figure out what you want to build & how you want to go about it.
And don't forget to have lots of fun.
