It's time for a new Generic Standy Design...

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Andrew,
I am rehabbing an older travel trailer. Its frame consists of a 3" channel with angle welded to the bottom. There are (3) 2" angles that run across the trailer to the outside wall (84"). only one is behind the wheel and there is no channel connecting the 2 main frame rails. There is one additional angle inbetween the 2 ahead of the wheels, but it only connects the main channel. The main channel is bent to form the A frame.
This trailer is from 1970 and the frame is plenty strong. Of couse the main channel is likely much larger stock than a bolt together trailer.

The trailer cabin floor (orig 1/2" ply which I made 5/8") rests on top of the channel and on 2x4's cut to the height of the channel (about 3" tall) which are resting on the angle. The trailer cabin is secured to the frame with lag bolts (yes and only 9 - that's just the way they did it) bolted through the angle. It does not have a dropped floor but it easily could - and have considered doing so as it has a max interior height of 6' -I'm 6'4 so I'd have to stoop regardless so I am still contemplating if it is worth the time an effort for 3".

In the second drawing, I have tried to make a sectional view of this construction. the red is the frame rail, the blue is 2x4 trimming to height of the frame rail, and there would be angle secured to the bottom of the channel. The trailer cabin floor (non dropped portion)would be resting on the main channel or 2x4's, and the dropped section directly on the angles.

Like you said, it will probably be strong enough, but I'm not an engineer so that's why I posted it as an idea.

If it works, it might be a neat way to build a rear door Scotty.

Why not have a poptop? Andrew's Compact shows off some great ideas for popping the top. I think it would be easier to build the poptop than a complicated dropped frame. That way you could have plenty of headroom as well as fitting in the 7' garage.

I knew I had seen a similar frame here. This is Gerald G's frame. While I don't think he dropped the floor, it is almost exactly as I described.

Trailmanor has an interesting system that's sorta pop up and Winter warrior...such a system could be adapted to TTT and still have the garage thing...

That's what Rayvillan wants to build for his retirement trailer. He's asked me for some design ideas. It's been a year, and I am still struggling with the lift mechanism, plus making it smaller and lighter... :?

Playing around with my parallel ruler...(I'll bet you cad guys don't know what that is  ) seems like a simple thing to do ... a 3/4" ply carcase or main "box" with 1/4" ply and frame tops, overlapping with some really good seals in the mating edges...pivot arms mounted low and high to make an arc of shallow depth..the only catch is the tops have to be light enough so you don't need the Incredible Hulk to open it...two people perhaps??? A simple model would probably be the way to work this out...It really is a good way to get alot of space in a Garageable ' TTT...

The TMs do seem to be a bit "pricy"..for what you get ...
The pivot arms ('torsion bars" )do seem to be spring loaded to facilitate opening ...

I've seen the Trailmanor up close and they use aluminum tube for frame in the top and a torsion bar system underneigh the trailer to make the top come up easy. The top almost comes up by it's self. A teenage girl could lift it.
The problem I've had looking at is the size. I'd tried to make one that was 10 ft long and 5 ft wide like the WW and it won't work because of the longer bunk length. Should be workable with a 6 or 7 ft width which is like the commercial one.
These are a nice trailer but they don't make anything shorter than 18 ft. opening to 26 ft.

You guys are gonna' think badly of me , but the wife went out and bought a Jayco feather sport...for hurricane evacuation ... I was told at the last minute and I guess she couldn't just sneak it in the door as I've done so many times... She had been colluding with a friend who came here in a BIG RV motorhome ...Thank God she didn't want one of those ... hey , I saw that movie "RV".
Well I guess I'm outta' the glee club now... darn, and I had just made a deal on a nice bare Pop-up trailer with one of the guys in the band... Guess it's back to the Airliner now ... at least I have that .... I hope

Sorry , hope I didn't waste anybody's time...

My sister has a TrailManor and the problem that they have encountered is in the seals. Dust gets in and ALL over the place on the tow in and tow out. They spend an immense amount of time cleaning the inside; so much so, that they are selling and looking for an alternative.

A two Straight edges connected by a pair of equal length links? Discription
or and updated to a Paralle slide ruler Just look under ruler ( the first item ). :)

And yes I still use them both alot when drawing in the field away from a CAD system.

I've been known to lay out teardrop designs while camping, on a picnic table, using just one of these... (and a pad of paper!)
