I just don't see how they are can very marketable if they only go 30 miles before needing to be recharged again!!!

I think a few of the 'coming' models may be vapourware just as yet, but the Xebra is definitely available.

I usually see those at apartment complexes. It is more like a fancy golf cart than an actual car.

Ooooooh! I just have a problem with the $50,000 ($30,000 if you want to be at the bottom of the list!) reservation fee. Then another $50,000 upon delivery.

But it has great performance and gets 135 mpg!

They're popular in European cities like London, which offer public places to charge them.

I doubt that there are many cities in the US where they'll ever catch on - Seattle and Portland, maybe.

I have seen places with reserved parking and an extension cord for electric cars. This started years ago.

But we are the tree hugging state.

Those Gems are junk don't waste your money or time. I have a fleet of 13 golf carts. 3 gas carts and the rest are electric, one 48 volt and the rest 36 volt. The helicopter company bought 5 of those Gems and have had nothing but problems. They now have bought two more golf carts and went with EZ-GO.

Our college campus has a number of the Gem cars. They work great for the work crews getting around campus. They are narrower to get through the bicycle traffic, they close up in bad weather unlike golf carts, and don't take much power. They are just plugged in during the off shift - they are used at all hours of the day and night.

As a person who has driven an electric car (a converted subaru van) to high school. I will say if a family has two cars, and the range is more than the round trip for someones commute, this becomes a workable solution.

as soon as someone comes up with a Battery small enough and will hold charge long enough......... the gas powered car will be history... and it's comin' everyday... the EPA will kill anything thats not good for the environment . and where they need it most is in big cities , and they don't need something that will go 100 miles... 2 or 3 blocks will do for most folks..... I like the looks of the little 3 wheeler myself.

I was in Pasadena California last week and saw a sign for public vehicle charging.

I was amazed that in Los Angeles area that that existed

My son and I are currently gathering the parts to build an electric motorcycle so he can commute to work in good weather. Mostly this is for the novelty and another project as he is also a compulsive "projects" guy. His commute is 22 km (14 mi) one way and he can plug in at work so this should be a reasonably doable project. Lots of information available via any search engine. The only real problem is those 22 km are on a highway with a traffic flow at 100 kph (62 mph) still doable but not as simple as building for the lower speeds within urban areas.

New battery technology makes it even more doable but the cost of the batteries is prohibative so we will probably stick to gel.

Anyone else got an electric project going?
