Car Transport

I am thinking about buying a car located in California. Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with car transportation companies. I've no experience with this kind of deal and would appreciate any help.

Are you talking about the kind where someone drives it to you or where they stick it on a semi with 8 others? I actually drove 2 cars to Texas from Florida when I was in college. The first one was for a business and I forgot to give them the keys (had to mail them from New Orleans).The second I couldn't get a hold of the owners (tried for 2 days)in Dallas and I was going to Houston so I left it at DFW and left a message on their machine about where to find it. It could still be there for all I know, so if thats what you are talking about be sure to communicate with the driver.

Scott, they do it on the east coast all the time, mostly cars from yankeeland down to Florida when the parents flock south because they can't get warm enough in the winter with just heating oil..they need heating oil and sunshine.

so i'm sure you can find a company that gathers up a load and divides the cost between ya's.

Glenn, I may have to take you up on that. I have a car that my brother wants to buy from me. He's in Atlanta. Now he has to come up with the money. Just because he's my brother doesn't mean I'm gonna go easy on him.

Actually it was my mother-in-law's car and I am the executor of the estate. I have to split up the money and give it to my wife and siblings.

Scott, I have never had occaision to use these folks but a local hot rod dealership uses them regulary and seem to be happy with them........

I used Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) when I moved from CA to FL. They moved my Nissan truck and the teardrop with no problems. I don't know what the charges were as the company paid for my move. But the service was good and no damage to either unit.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am looking at buying a car on E-Bay which kind of scares me. I'll let you all know if I get the nerve to actually pull the trigger on this deal.

I have bought 4 cars on ebay...been let down 1.5 times...one car wasn't even close and the other one was kind of. Be sure to talk to the person...ask a lot of questions...if you don't get warm and fuzzy....run fast. You can kind of tell when someone gets attached to their car and that is the one you want.

Also...I have a motorcycle site I frequent and someone is always up for a ride some where. I have passed up 3 vehicles just from their input. Maybe it is close to someone here...I know I always like to go for a drive to look at cars.

If you can call on somebody to go check out the car, do so. I know some exotic car dealers that post cars on eBay, but not so much to actually sell, but to publicize the cars, and generate interest.

There are lots of honest sellers out there, and honest buyers, but it only takes one crook to take your money.

Where, exactly, in Cali is the car. Maybe someone here can go look at it. If it is in LA, I can probably call one of my car buddies there.

I used "DAS" to ship my Model A from the east coast to Alaska..... they did a good job for me. (NO... I won't tell you how much that cost! )
