WoW!!! Super thread and just what we've been looking for , and many with similar interests...
What about a simple Airliner design (Mine ) simple box with rounded front for streamlining...Plenty of cubic feet for just about anything ... within reason... can be built to most any size... Kitchen in rear (it has a built in awning/overhang) Large bath /shower for my largish 6'3" 235lb carcass..lots of storage under things... Cool !!! Based on the old "mansions"(toasters) ... just smaller

I have heard of Fema selling off the campers and have heard of different prices. GPW do you know where to get the info to buy these campers??? I have searched here (around Baton Rouge) and have not had much luck. I would like to take a look to see what's available.

Rik... We have a friend who is an attorney for FEMA... she advised NOT to buy these trailers , because they were hastily built and real , excuse the expression ... CRAP !!! most are falling apart already ... Only a few were taken from good stock , if you can get one of those , that's well cared for then that's good... They're selling them to the present owners for $600.00... a real good deal if you have a good one ...
They plan to crush all the extras , so as not to affect the "trailer market"... ...another serious waste of taxpayers dollars ...we just have to get some new guys in office ...these clowns don't care about us ,little guys...

As for their condition? Some of them have been trashed & vandalized... Which is no big surprise to me. A few years back I tried renting houses & apartments under the Government's Section 8 Low Income housing program. I found I could not make money renting this way even with guaranteed payments through HUD. The renters destroyed the houses faster than I could fix them.
Some people just do not appreciate what they get for free in this country.

Some have gotten Free for so long , they now EXPECT it, and feel it is their due ... When they can't get it , they hold demonstrations about how unfairly they are being treated...when they can't get it , they steal it .... we have lots of footage of our "culture" looting almost every store and shop during Katrina, when done , they burned it...ruined many businesses here , many never to open again... The "Great Society " indeed!!!!!! All started with section 8...


Now they want 2 million a piece, for something that happened long ago to people who they didn't even know ....

From my experience, I think you are dealing with people who have a history of making poor decisions throughout their life. Maybe some of it is because of how they were raised, some because of peer pressure and environment. But, skin color doesn't seem to be much of a factor. The fact is... By and large poor people are that way by their own doing (or lack thereof). Blaming other people and government for their problems is endemic. And, seething resentment of others that have done better in their lives leads to vindictive and destructive behavior... even self destructive in many cases. Of course, the fact our government has a history of enabling, and even rewarding, such behavior doesn't help much.

The ant and the grasshopper



OLD VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long,
building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and

demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed
while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the
shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home
with a table! fill ed with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor
grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody
cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green."

Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Larry King that
the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for
an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act
retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing
to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left
to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a
defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of
federal judges that Bill Clinton appointed from a list of single-parent
welfare recipients.


The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of
the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens to
be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain
it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in
a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a
gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote.

All I can say is that's funny and soooooo.... true about the current version. I just wanted to share some insight about this whole Fema deal. A couple weeks ago I dove through New Orleans East onto Chalmette and Mereaux and I was still in awe of how the area still looks. Very nice homes (at one time) just lay abandoned. Six Flags looks like eery not in operation. Just very depressing.

On the other hand driving through Mississippi and you can pass literally acres and acres of Fema trailers (as many as you can fill inches apart) not in use. More Gov't waste as they pay for the rental space to house unused campers.
It continues to be a sad tale everyday that seems forgotten unless you are in the area and are easily reminded.

The truly sad part is that most of the Federal"relief" money went to large Republican corporations that paid themselves millions in salaries and took most of the money off the top to reimburse themselves for their hefty "campaign contributions"...
Enough about New Orleans ... we're workin' on it ... gonna' take some time ...The ants are busy again ... grasshoppers are still screamin' for their "free" homes...
We've also learned , the hard way , that homeowners insurance is a total joke , and the money would be better spent in your "home account" at the bank , drawing interest ...Although the insurance companies posted record profits , our beloved government is giving them hundreds of millions of our ant dollars for "relief".. "Pirates of the Gulf"is what we call em'...
Having a Bugout trailer is a great comfort, mentally ... a place to always call "HOME"...

With considerable thinking the bottom line on these bigger trailers is weight ... The GVW cannot be exceeded , so we have to carefully plan what we're going to use , and what is just dead weight ...The wife suggested suitcases... I suggested gym bags ...less weight and space ... that kind of stuff ...We have alot of stuff to bring to make us comfortable ,and stuff we just can't do without like some of my guitar collection , art stuff , bows and arrows, etc...the more weight we save , the more stuff we can bring .... I'm making a list of weights (bathroom scale ) of my junk and adding it up ..only way to really know ...
The only thing now , is we don't quite understand the sprung and un sprung weight thing ...is GVW the combination of both ????
