I've found that I have to be careful with the clutch setting, when joining hardwoods, to keep from twisting the head off the screws. You need to clamp each joint really well to keep them from creeping as the screws tighten. I've yet to split anything. The best thing about the tool is you get to assemble the piece, install it and play with it awhile before comitting yourself to glue
