NightCap - I guess so. I really don't like sitting around when camping though - it drives me nuts. I go camping so that I can do stuff, not sit there. I'm also getting the itch for another project as my camper is almost finished. I'm thinking about a sailboat. :thinking:

Hey I'll fess up, it was a Sniglet on the HBO program, Not Necessarily the News. NNTN was on so long ago that we were still riding bikes around the neighborhood. I know it is old and obscure but that one stuck with me because we had first hand experience at the time.

With the Puffin build winding down (I'm going to remove the spar on the roof this week so the top will be smooth) I've already decided on another project.

I wanted a sailboat, so I was going to build a nesting dinghy that would store inside the Puffin. I also wanted something I could row when the winds weren't blowing. The sailing dinghy is a great boat, but not really my speed. Then it hit me, I could make a sailing canoe! Then it hit me again, I could make a cool sailing kayak with a sealed cockpit!

This is my first line drawing. It's based off the 14' free canoe plans at bateau.com.

I will have two outriggers, making this a trimaran. The canopy will be sealed, and I'll be laying down, almost on my back. I figured out that I have enough room to place the hull on my car rack, and still have enough room to carry two mountain bikes up there as well. I anticipate the hull weighing 30-40 pounds. The outriggers will be carried in the Puffin, or in the car when I'm not camping.

The cockpit canopy will be constructed from foam and then glassed, just like my velo body was constructed.

I'm thinking of staying with the Puffin color scheme here too: black hull, red rub strake, and white deck. Tinted plexi for the cockpit. I'll have to have some big mirrors on the deck to know what's behind me. I'll be able to remove the cockpit when I want to use the center section as a regular canoe. I'm thinking about another cutout for a second person so it could be used as a kayak with the outriggers.

Oh sailboats...... melikey!!!

I "started" modifying my kayak for a sail, it got complicated, so I put it on the back burner until I am done with the TD.. I made a cool rudder though.

Good Luck with the boat build. Keep Us posted please, I'd like to follow your progress. :thumbsup:

Still have alot of little stuff to do.. Trying to deside on what type of stripe(s) I am going to put down the sides.. Also thinking about running some aluminum flashing accross the bottom of the front for rock protection and to add a little more "bling" and maybe running some aluminum on the side skirts as well.

The paint is actually more/darker grey than it turned out in my pics?

What type of adhesive did you use to attach your edge strips? I used subfloor construction adhesive, Seems like Mine might come off easier than I had hoped for???

Also realized I had forgotten to add a picture of the door side to my album..

With your new project to be, I hope that doesnt mean you will be leaving us on these forums, Dont think mine would of ever gotten to this point without all your help...

HA! Your funny!! But Looks aren't everything....

Actually the triangle part on top is backerds...but it will work. here is the link to my pics so far... http://tinyurl.com/37v7y9

The foot pedals were installed in the front of the Kayak as adjustable foot rests for the front seat person. , I moved them back and took out the plastic pin and WaaaaLaaa, instant pedals for the rudder. :thumbsup:

The mast footing is going to have to be beefed up big time though so don't copy it.

Andrew, gave me some awesome help on out riggers for it. And that is where it got complicated. They are going to have to be fiber glassed. I have never done fiberglass, so it will be fun.

I thought about doing that at one time. I found some really nice (very thin) diamond plate that was decorative. It was really thin, and cheap.

I screwed the stripe on from the inside just enough to hold onto the trailer. I then came back with a small fillet of epoxy across the top to seal/hold it. I need to run a bead of adhesive on the bottom, but mine isn't coming off with the epoxy fillet holding it. I even left a few of the screws inside the camper.

I have no plans to leave the forum. I like helping, or trying to help.

Oh, and blingin' it out is the fun part. The hard stuff is through.

Lobbin' some ideas.

Did you go with the 30" or the 32" caps? Whichever you chose, they sure look nice.

Thanks for the visual, thats very simular to what I had in mind, probably a little less on the skirts and more on the front, but yah for the most part very close..

..

So you screwed your garage door gaskets (strips) on then epoxied? Or were you refering to your red srip on the sides? My garage door seals I used on the top edges is what I was referring to.

Oh, for that I used liquid nails construction adhesive. I also had to tape it down with duct tape until it had time to cure. I then came back and sealed it with silicone.

Nah,
The bottom two lugs are plenty visable/reachable on the tire, just hard to tell in the pics.. Plenty of room to pull the tire off and put the spare on if ever needed, I Tested it out just to make sure...

I might down the road cut out fenders, but havent decided yet...

So you say you are going to remove the top outer spar? are you going to replace it with anything inside or is it not needed?
