Any trick for getting rid of gnats?

Postby WarPony » Mon Jul 09, 2007 10:17 pm

I drink beer, save the cans (in the garage) and have a gnat problem. We tried apple cider vinegar in a bowl............. a few die but the rest hang out on the beach and watch. I don't like pesticides and won't do a bug bomb or use DEET in the house.
Any cheap, safe ways to do it?

Don't know if it works for gnats but I've heard that it works for flys. I've never tried this but some people swear by it.

Supposedly, if you hang a clear plastic full of water in the area, the flys freak out and leave.

A neighbor has 1 gallon ziplocks hanging from the eves of his patio and a local restaurant has them hanging around their outside dining area. Maybe it works because I didn't notice any flys.

Anyone else heard of this?

Jeff
Get a wide mouth quart canning jar. Drop in a piece of banana, leave the lid off. Set the jar in the area where the gnats are. In a day or two when the banana starts to rot the gnats will go in the jar, they love rotten bananas. Quickly put on the lid. Don't leave the lid off for too many days, they breed like rabbits. Now use your imagination on how to get the gnats out of the jar.

Jack & Rocky:

Flies go bye bye for zips half full of water in doorways they say ~

Another opinion of why the water bags work for flies, below:

Water bags do drive houseflies away. Not mosquitoes, not no-see-ums, not spiders, not roaches, not yellowjacket wasps, just houseflies. Evidently, houseflies, being highly edible and defenseless, are nervous types, and don't like to sit still when they see something moving nearby, because it could be a predator. The water bag acts a bit like a lens--try it some time--in which the movements of people in the area are reflected. Even if the fly is too far from the action to see it directly, it can see a shifting of light and dark in the water bag, which it interprets as nearby movement, and it will fly away from the bag. The reason it doesn't work on any other insects is that the other insects listed don't have eyesight worth a plugged nickel. Basically it distorts what they are seeing and confuses them.

   ..............Steve I read the gnat control in the EHow link. I liked the one where the dude used a bottle of Mickey's beer, drank half of it and left the rest with the lid off. I think a warm Mickey's will kill ANYTHING!!!!!!

I'll think I'll try the baking soda and vinegar trick first. The clear bag full of water trick will have to wait for our next camping trip. I've never heard of that one but sounds like a good idea.

Why do you keep the cans?

As a badge of honor? Or to recycle?

When you hear things like this, you just gotta stand up and applaud this country:

Do you think they came up with this solution in PAKISTAN!?

I recycle. I save them starting from Memorial Day, the next year I turn them in and use the money for more beer, food and canoe rental for the upcoming Memorial Weekend.

Jeff, If you rinse the cans out before you store them, the gnats will have nothing to be attracted to.

Man...how many acres do you have ANYWAY to store all of those cans!?

For me it's justone weekend, and the kids are being shoved out the windows for lack of space.

But we don't redeem here.

A republican state, you know.
