New from Delaware

Postby KnuckleHead » Tue Jul 10, 2007 2:32 pm

New to the site here. Just wanted to drop in and say you guys have some great designs and builds and hopefully I can pull some inspiration.

My goal is to build something similar to the Ripple that I can use both on a Harbor Freight trailer (or custom trailer) and detach from the trailer and mount to the front of a car hauler similar to a Toy Hauler but with room for my Rock Crawler up front.

My first question would be, what is the weight of a typical 4x4x8 TTT minus the trailer? I need to figure out if such a project might add too much tongue weight to the car hauler.

Thanks.

Hi Knucklehead,

Welcome to the forum.

A 'typical' tear is somewhat of a difficult thing to find. It all depends on what YOU want. Some tears are made from sheets of plywood, others have insulation. Some are woodies with fibreglass covering (look at Steve Frederick's woodies for inspiration), and some tears are covered with aluminium.

Any ideas of what you're after? Insulation for the cold, or just 'plain'? It all affects the weight.

Kind Regards,
Barrie

Keep moving forward.

To the playground Knucklehead. OH that doesn't sound nice   I see you got the picture thing down so thanks. You can build as light as you want. Just takes a bit more care in putting it together.

There are lots of lite builds on the board and even a full cad workup on the Ultra lite. 8)

To build something that is usable for both on its own trailer frame as well as a flat deck trailer can be easily done. To make it work on both trailer platforms, each trailer will need to be configured to accept it where you want it to be on the trailer frame. As you are trying to do, determine the weight factor to see if you can do such a thing in the first place with your existing flat bed trailer. You could make it all work, but the existing flat bed will have to reconfigure its axles location. You will need to determine your Toyota wheeler weight, where it will sit on the trailer, figure some 800-1000#s (or more) for a camper on the tongue, and go from there.
What a lot of wheelers have done in the past using a flat bed trailer was to extend their back end to include a dovetail, then relocated the axles, and added a pop-up camper for their wheeling/camping needs.
Another consideration would be overall width and length size. Do you plan to turn the camper sideways on the flat deck or keep it front to back like on the frame?

What a lot of wheelers have done was sell the bumper pull flat bed trailer and got a gooseneck. Many wheelers then add a slide-in truck camper (bigger) to the tongue. This kept their tow vehicle's bed open for other pickup bed needs (work related) rather than using a slide-in camper.
