I can't even imagine how hard it is to keep everything from freezing up on those trucks. Worse yet...imagine what a PITA it is to thaw one out!!!

I've seen that show before, it really is amazing.
Juneaudave they have special "rooms" to thaw out the trucks if everything happens to freeze.
Some of the drivers have been driving at route for years. Seems to take a certain kind of driver to be able to do it year after year.

Crazy maybe but they make a years wages in two months. Just think 10 months of teardrop building, with no worries if you made any money or not. Down side is they have deal with cold (del's definition of cold is 20c (70f) or colder).

...I tried for years to get a gig up there...at the time, Robeson Trucking(they built the first ice road) controlled the whole thing and I guess they figured, what the hell did I know about ice road trucking, being from Louisiana...a true story...20yrs ago I pulled into a truckstop in Austin Mn...predidcted low for the night was -25*F...I filled up with winter blend diesel and added twice the de-icer to the fuel than was recommended and bought an 5buck fuel filter...I then went to bed...in the morning, there were frozen trucks all over the lot and the truckstop was charging 150 buck to drag them into it's shop to thaw out...that 5buck filter was now selling for 25 to 50 bucks since the TS was out of them...I took off laughing at the "locals" with frozen trucks...5 mi down the road, I had to pull over and change the filter since the truck would not exceed 50mph...went on to Duluth Mn, where the temp at 10AM was -35*F...so I guess I did know a little about ice road driving afterall...Robesons and my loss........

p.s....don't know that I would care to do it now(ice road trucking)............ 8)

Good one MJ...just looking at that "Ice Road Trucker" show, I'm not sure that you really get the idea of just how hard or dangerous it is running out of place like Yellowknife. One thing for sure...at minus zero...fussing with an air line has got has got to leave you "California Dreamin"!!!

Dave, I spent a HUGE chunk of my trucking career driving across the top half of the lower 48...have driven Donner, Cabbage Patch, Snoqualmie, Sississyque and just about everything the lower 48 had to offer...all covered in snow and ice in sub-zero temps...while I would certainly not underestimate the trials and travails of the ice roads, I am sure it would be tougher than I imagined...however, 20 yrs ago, I was still bulletproof and would have gone up there in a heartbeat....
madjack(not nearly as bulletproof now) 8)

...that's Concrete Cowboys to you...and smile when you say it :D ;) ...say, how about "Cajuns in Pirogues", commercial crawfishin' in the Atchafaylaya Basin...they'll be fightin' gators and rattleback cotton moccasins...and each other for the "true" black and red, gold of the swamps...
