I would like to mount a spare tire on the hatch of my teardrop. something like the old cars have on the rear bumper. Does anyone know where I could find something that may work? I could also make something if someone has any ideas. Thanks in advance.

If you put a hitch in the middle, you can make a bracket that looks like you have your spare on the hatch, removable when you want to open the hatch. I think a hatch with a spare mounted on it will be WAAAY to heavy to open, or stay open...

Ive had the same idea as you and am still trying to figure it out. just started my build so when I get there ill post pics of what I did and if you finish soon post pics of how you did it.

I caught a lot of flak when I welded a drop down bracket to mount a full sized 15 inch tire under my frame...

If I were to do it again....I would probably try to either 1) match the hubs to the tow vehicle so I could use the tow vehicles spare or 2) buy a "donut" type spare to save weight and space....

But what the heck!!!! to each his own!!!! :lol:

There have been a couple of tears that mounted their spare tire at the rear of the trailer. In fact, I believe that Gage has a photo of one.

At first thought it seems like you would need some sort of "swing away" arm would allow you to get the wheel out of the way when you are camping. A lot of older SUVs have some sort of swing out arm that holds their spare tire. Unfortunately most of them have an upper and lower hinge, and I don't think that's the look you are trying to achieve. A single arm and hinge would have to be a lot stronger since all the weight would be carried through it. Oh yeah, you probably want the unit to swing out to the left (towards the driver's side) since most trailer sites are set up on the passenger's side and you don't want to have to dodge around the wheel when you are camping.

Just my .02 worth.

I can't remember where, but I have seen a picture of a spare mounted on the rear that swung down and around and could be used as a table. I'm sure someone else has seen this and can post a picture.
