Doors on a Woody?

Postby peggyearlchris » Sat Jul 21, 2007 8:07 pm

How much smaller do I need to make the doors than the opening? Or how much clearance do I need for my doors on a woody. I'm not sure how to do the doors. Any pictures out there? Thanks Peg

Peg,

I made my doors with about 1/8" clearance all around except on the hinge side it had to be a little bigger for the hinge to fit. When I built the doors they were pretty different than any I'd seen, but so far I haven't had any water leaks or warping problems. I really like Roly's doors.

Like Steve I left about a 1/8th opening all around with a little more for the hinge side. My doors are 1/2" but framed both inside and out since I was going for the use of a regular doorknob. I've had no issue either about warping.

Thanks Barb for posting the pic. I didn't sleep good last night thinking about the doors. It seems like I do alot of thinking at night instead of sleeping.   Peg

Hi Peg, well would you look at all of the great wooden doors on those woodies. I made mine an 1/8 inch smaller all around, weatherstripped the stop on the interior and have had no problems. I would suggest that you create a wooden drip mold at the top, as shown on some of the pics, as this lets the cascade of rain water drip off the edge before it can run down the side of the tear and onto the door itself.

Take pics, and post those shots.

Roly, just another little woody owner, builder and user.
