HI! from new Vegan newbies

Postby daveleb55 » Mon Jul 30, 2007 11:50 am

No, I'm not a vegetarian, I'm a Vegan from Las Vegas

I have to blame Joanne for my newest affliction, she built this awesome teardrop from an old boat trailer; (kids, don't try this at home!) and even though I was living in a trailer at the time, I was infected, er, afflicted, um, assimilated! (resistance is futile!!)

I had suggested the idea as a possibility to my GF, and now she's totally addicted/infected/assimilated as well. We kicked around some ideas, I have a small 4cyl toyota P/U truck, so it would have to be light enough etc.

So, yesterday, we responded to an ad on Craigslist, and bought an old popup with two flat tires for $250. It had been sitting for ten years, neglected and nearly forgotten, the owner's widow just wanted to get rid of it. Had to buy two new wheels to tow it out of there. I figured for the price, even if it's junk inside, the frame alone was worth it.

I dremeled off the little padlock, and cranked it up. Would it be full of camping gear frolm years gone by? Would it be full of rodent nests and other vermin infestations?? Apart from black widow nests in the hubcaps, it was free from any invasions. A little dusty, the insides are clean, almost like it had never been used. The cook top was immaculate. It has a 3 burner propane stovetop, a pump faucet on the built in sink, a bunch of cabinetry. The canvas is disintegrating, but we may be able to salvage parts of it for an awning. It's actually in good shape except for a couple holes in the front and rear plastic panels. The sides are metal, might be able to incorporate that into my design. So, tonight we strip off the rotten canvas and start dis-assembling. I will recycle as much of it as I can.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as I clean the garage enough to drag it inside!

Dave & Kathleen

Dave & Kathleen , Welcome to the forum. sounds like the fun has just begun. Maybe some of the salvage could be incorporated into your new build. One plus is that you already should have a title and won't have to bother with an inspection from the state. When you get the time take some pictures as we will be interested to see your progress. :D Danny

I had no Idea that people from Las Vegas were called Vegans. I have Family in Las Vegas NM and they always say their from Las Vegas.

Any ways I want to do the same thing you are doing with the pop up. I'm excited for you.

Mandy :)

Sounds awesome! I saw a neat trailer once, built by adding a camper shell on an old tent trailer base. The tent trailer had storage bins built into the sides, to hold small misc. stuff! Be sure to post some pictures as you make progress!

to the playground Kathleen and Dave. You are in great hands with Joanne. Her build blog is one of the favorites around here especially with the women.

How big is your pop-up. A couple of us have used them and kept them wide. They aren't as light as they could be though.

Enjoy the site and jump in anytime.

Welcome Dave and Kathleen.
Sounds like an old pop up could lead up to something nice. Good Luck! :)

Yep, it's all my fault!! 8) I'm a teardrop evangelist! In fact I had another interested guy drop buy on Saturday to check out the trailer. It sounds like he has decided to build and is starting to work out the "wants and needs".

After work yesterday I dropped by Kathleen & Dave's place to inspect the trailer. The trailer looks solid so it will be interesting to see how the build progresses. I made certain that they understood the importance of pictures.

Pah! Star Trek indeed! Quote the original, not the copy. 'Resistance is useless' was one of the favourite phrases of The Daleks, usually just before: "Ex-ter-min-ate, ex-ter-min-ate".

Stripped out all the old rotten canvas. Actually it was only on the one side, so the two end pieces are only partially affected. If we were to "redo" the popup, we would go with ripstop nylon instead of canvas. But we're going to do something hardsided instead.

Real "Vegans" come from Las Vegas, Nevada; beware of imitations!
Just like people from Lebanon, Maine are NOT called Lebanese - see the difference? No? Oh well, never mind, then....
