Bruce,
Yaa got yourself a keeper!
It's a Wagner #8 with a low base.
I really like Wagner's wood handles, very comfortable on the grip.
If you want or need to reseason it, those handles do unscrew... might take a bit to get 'em started when unscrewing them...

Cool, thanks Dean. I figured it was a keeper, just wanted to make sure.

Just say no to gas!!! It's got to be a charcoal event or it's not a real cast iron cookoff.

I was going to bid on those but spent the morning in the dentist chair and then for a visit to my x-teardrop. :(
Seems I lost everywhere. Hope you got a good price, that one did look nice.

You know, I wondered if anyone else on the list was looking at this one. Sorry about the dentist but I'm glad I snagged it. Seems like I got it for a good price at $36.75.

Actually Joanne...I'm working on not using charcoal or gas, just coals in the campfire for DO cooking...but I gotta learn first, without wasting a lot of eats. Mt. man breakfast with fire coals is really easy...baking, I find is more difficult to control with fire coals. My excuse..."it's not burned...just carmelized" and anyone can whup me at waffles...I borrowed Kevins iron that Dean seasoned and Joanie made the batter...they just made me look good!!!! Doug

You did well, the last couple of days they have been going for close to $50.
Good timing.

How would a charcoal set-up work? Coals in that ring?? I've only used my camp stove..

I caught the bug. I found one at the local Antique (junk) mall. Its a place where local people who think they're antique dealers rent little cubbies. It's very, very crusty. No rust though. Paid $25. There's so much thick black crust that I can barely read the markings. I think the owner didn't want to go through the trouble of cleaning it. One side seems to says Griswold and Erie. It looks like the othe side says American. Also maybe 1901. It dosen't have the Griswold cross in the middle of either side. There are two wooden handles that are in very good condition. They are held on by small nails that go through holes in the cast iron. I'm going to remove the handles and put it in a lye bath in a covered plastic tub out in the 100 degree weather for a few days. I'm afraid to use heat to remove the crust.

Mary,
Sounds like you have a Griswold American #8 maybe...
That's a steal of a deal.
Another easy way to strip cast iron is by using the electroysis method.
Tub of water, battery charger and a sacraficial strip of steel.
When I get time, I'll put up a few stickies for things like coal counting, electroysis cleaning, seasoning and other tid bits of useful info...

Dennis, sorry about the dentist thing. But I want to know what the new owner thinks of the teardrop.

Sorry about the hijack Bruce.
