Wood Plugs, Any tips & tricks from the experts?

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby Classic Finn » Fri Aug 03, 2007 5:04 pm

Here in Finland I found out by asking about the wood plugs that I can purchase ready made ones...but it sounds too easy..

Id really like to learn how to make my own.. So Im following Mary K and Shootr and other pros on this thread.. with interest.

There is some things Id like to use the plugs for on our tear as well.

So Im watching and will be following this subject..

So Mary wit a K post a lot of pics... ;)

Mary K, I have a bit of wood-plug experience in my woody. I have counted 600 so far, but got tired of counting. I make all of my plugs out of birch or maple 1/2 inch dowel pins. I cut them about an 1/8th of an inch longer than the depth of the hole, and glue them in with titebond II.

The mistake I made when I started on my plugs, was to sand them down flush while the glue was still wet. This smears the glue into the grain of the adjoining wood, changing it's color or preventing stain from entering the glue area, resulting in a lighter situation.

If you want to eliminate the dark ring around your pre-made plugs, you might want to cut the plugs out of black walnut, since you are using a plug cutter. Increase the speed of the drill press, drill the plugs more slowly, snap them out of the waste piece with a screwdriver and have at it again.

Roly.......not the words of an expert, just from a trial and error kind of guy ;)

I cut my own plugs too, but I used an electric drill....don't have a drill press. I found the sides tended to burn.....too slow, too fast or wobbling??
I went right through the 3/4 board, figured I can get 2 plugs in one shot.

Man, I can not manage my time very well. I have gotten ahead of myself here, so I'm not ready to start the plugs yet. But all the advice has me in the right frame of mind.

I will be installing the hatch hinge with the Sikflex, recomended by MadJack, this evening when it cools off some. I will get pictures.

Wish me luck

:? :? I missed this the other day, sorry Heikki

I installed the living or Plastic hinge from McMaster-Carr.

Installation went well, I am letting it cure for a few days before I try opening the hatch. But I am sure it will work fine.

The "flexing pig" squished out all over the place and once it dried, trimmed right off.

I will try to get pictures tonight.

P.S. Tony
, I got my laundry and the grass cut yesterday (Monday). And it did Suckith... Big Time. I had to cut the front yard twice. That's what I get for procrastinating.

Dagon Heikki, yor writin redneck acksent is gud!!! :applause:

  Ya know Heikki, it was just easier to buy them then to make them. I figure I have 260 holes to plug and there is about 220 in that "bucket". 2 bag short, figures huh?

That bit is in a Dewalt 9.5 cordless drill. The bit is a counter sink bit I purchased as a set at HF
Image

Of course being the brut that I am, I broke the bit and had to shove the countersnk thingie close to the end.

And Yes, it makes the holes for the plugs.
