What to do with the mess in the cabin...

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby 48Rob » Mon Aug 06, 2007 7:04 am

Thanks all for the compliments :)

I was concerned that it might come out looking cheap, like it was just a bunch of pipe and fittings cobbled together...but I think it's going to work.
A little patina, and the right things in it, and It willl look like it belongs.

Some lacquer or sealer after the copper ages to the right shade of brown is a good idea, thanks.

The trailer weighs 2400 pounds.

Mike...don't think I can help with that mess!

There isn't an easy answer.
We take all the things we need, or think we need, because we want to be comfortable.
Nothing wrong with that, when I go camping, it is all about having the most comfort I can pack into a small space.
I tried hard when designing and building the trailer to have a place for everything.
I fell short of that goal, but as time goes by, I'm dumping that which I do not use, and am dreaming up new methods of storage for the things that remain.
Once the wood slats dry I'll get a couple more pictures, all that stuff really does fit, except for the table top, which is the next challenge, along with the furnace...

Looks great!!! Watch that copper though. Around here, copper theft is getting really popular, and I would hate to see that happen.

That's a beautiful rack. I would like one to carry light bulky things like my chair, potty tent, etc. I think I could build one even with my limited skills now that I'v seen yours. My tear is quite small. It would have to go on top over the vent. If I'm traveling I try not to put stuff inside so all I have to do is crawl inside and sleep. I'm a little afraid to put my extra stuff outside next to the tear in campgrounds at night. If I'm traveling directly to a gathering I carry stuff inside.

The sealer dried, and I got all the clutter packed up and tied on the new luggage rack (even have a little extra room for cool garage sale finds...)
I think its going to work well! :P

Here are a few better pictures of the completed setup.

Heikki,

The Volkswagon racks are very nice.
Just be sure the mounting feet will land on framing, and not just the roof skin...

You did it again Rob

Dear Rob,

Congrats on the rack. Imagine how big the rack has to be for the guys and gals that did not build as big a tear :o

I know what you mean with trying to find something when you are trying to relax. Heck, I can't find things when I am trying to work!
Regards,

Thanks Guy!

I remember my first teardrop...it had a roof rack too, but my, how small it was!

Reddiver,

Thanks, it is 7' wide, 12'3" long, and 5'2" tall.

The bed does run crosswise, and is a full size mattress with an extra 7".
Works well for me, at 6'-2".

Thanks,

The frame?

Do you mean the steel frame, or the wood portion of the trailer?

The steel frame is from a late 40's travel trailer.
I did some major modifications, but didn't build it from scratch.

The cabin is typical teardrop construction, plywood walls, with no "extra" studs or framing.

Is that what you meant?
