Rookie Question

Postby Reddiver » Mon Aug 06, 2007 1:28 pm

This is my first post . I am an avid woodworker and Dutch Oven cook . OK here is my question
Why cut the frame from 60 to 58 inches why not just build the trailer two inches wider?

Finally... one I can answer !!! (Only because I've asked it before...)

It is so you can overhang the walls down the outside of the frame rails (to hide them) and still be able to use 5' wide wood for the top.

Steve you can do as you ask. You'll need to use 4x8 sheets vs 5x5 Baltic Birch, it's up to you. Some teardrops are as wide as 6'. Personally I'd stay within the 60" and make the chassis accordingly. :D Danny

Hey Reddiver,

With an intro like that you'll fit right in!! Woodworking and Dutch Oven cook'n?!?! That's right down our line. I have to admit that I'm better at the DO cooking than I am at the woodworking, but I'm trying to improve at both.

With a screen name of Reddiver, does that mean you scuba dive as well? That would be the third gold star.

Are you going to be attending the IDOS Region II gathering later this month? If so, I'll see you there! http://www.socaldos.org/r2dog07.htm

Welcome aboard!

I was taught by a couple of ex-Navy divers (one UDT and one ship maintenance diver). Never swam so many laps in my life!

This gathering isn't the big one up in Utah, but it's the Southern California regional gathering. I didn't realize that you were up in the SF area. This one is just north of LA.

There's a whole lota of teardropp'n and DO cook'n just north of you. I'd suggest attending a teardrop gathering if you get the chance. No one minds if you don't have a tear yet. It's a lot easier to envision how everything fits together when you've seen them in person. Plus it's a lot of fun!

Reddiver,

If you want to get lots of ideas about how to build a teardrop come to the SLO Gathering Sept. 13-15 near San Luis Obispo. You'll see 30 or so teardrops all in one place, be able to gab with people who have one, and go on lots of "tours."

I'm a newbie myself, don't have a teardrop, just an axle that arrived today, and will be camping in a tent. And I'm the event organizer (a sneaky way to get people to come to my home turf so I can gawk at their teardrops to get ideas)!! You'd be very welcome to join us. If you need to sleep in a tent you can probably share a campsite with someone who has a trailer.

Joanne, and Matt, will be giving a Dutch Oven cooking demonstration. There's a waffle making competition Saturday morning too. We're having a pot luck Saturday night.

How could you ever learn more and have a better time? More information is available in the Southwest forum down below.

Thank you Mary! Remember that I covered most of my woodworking with fiberglass and paint! I have great respect for those who leave their wood for all to see and admire.

Next year I'm going to have to make a swing through the south and visit all my southern friends.
