Anyone built a boat?

Postby Georgeandpat » Tue Mar 08, 2005 1:00 pm

Even though I'm not quite done with the teardrop I'm already thinking about building a boat. My teardrop experience is giving me confidence that I can build other things. How would those of you who have built a boat compare it to building a tear, timewise, costwise? Of course, it depends on what type and how big of a boat.

You'll definitely want to talk to Doug Hodder... or at least look at his boat build. Besure to go through all the pages and look at his completed boat... ;)

Holy cow, you're thinking about another project already, and a big one at that. I thought I was crazy because I was considering another one also. I'm considering building myself a new computer desk with all this woodworking stuff that I've acquired.

 I must be crazy too, because I am already planning on building a stripper double paddle canoe, a small stripper kayak, a double folding kayak and eventually a small motor boat! It's funny the connections you make on this site, I saw Steve F's kayaks on his homepage before I ever discovered this site, and I have seen Doug's boats on the Glen-L site long before I figured out the connection that he was on this site as well! You gotta love all the amazing talent that the members on this site have!

Amy :)

:?
I'm starting to catch some flack from the guy's on the boat building site.
They tell me that this teardrop thing is getting in the way of my boat building stuff.
Amy, check out the Outer Island kayak design for your kayak build.
After I finish this Redbird canoe and after I finish the Copperwood teardrop... I'm going to build an Outer Island.
Maybe when I'm old and grey and have nothing to do, I'll take on a project like what Doug did.

A "Six hour Canoe" is a good first time boat project and there's a how to boat that helps. I've built one and will be building another for my second daughter. It's 15 foot double paddle canoe, suitable for one adult or a couple of kids

And yes, it does take more than 6 hours

AmyH, Mikeschn, That is so strange. Yesterday I was looking at the Glen-L website and was admiring the Malahini mahogany boat not realizing that its builder, Doug is also building a teardrop! AsianFlava, Yeah it's a tall order but maybe it's no tougher than building a trailer? George.

I met Doug Hodder on the Glen-L forum some time back. I've been working on a Zip. That's a Glen-L design that's 14' long and calls for a 40hp short shaft outboard. Doug had built a Zip before he built his Malahini (a 16' Glen-L design) and I would compare notes with him via email and the phone. Anyway, he asked me how I was coming on the Zip and I told him that it had gotten pushed off into the side room of my shop because I was giving first priority to my teardrop. So I referred him to my Yahoo photo album and this forum and that's how he found out about this forum, came to be over here and building his own teardrop.

Here's the URL for the Glen-L site:

www.glen-l.com

They have a boatbuilding forum that is really very informative. Go to their site and then click on "boatbuilder's connection." They HAVE been having server problems this past weekend so if you can't get it, please be patient and try again later. It's worth the wait.

Anyone that's ready to try building a boat has my attention. I'll help anyway I can. I will say this though. It is WAY more involved than a teardrop but it is certainly NOT out of reach for anyone that has the desire. Any person that is patient and takes his time can achieve as good or better results than even Chris Craft in their heyday. The critical steps are:

Building form must be plum and level and then stay that way throughout the build.

After the framework is completed and before the planking goes on, there is a critical step called "fairing the hull." If this step is done wrong, the boat's appearance and performance could seriously suffer. So it's simply a case of taking the time needed to insure that it's correct.

Everything beyond that is basic carpentry.

I've built a few boats. I imagine people who like to camp also like boating, backpacking, etc.

Here's Lisa putting around in our pond.

Oh, and boat/motor is for sell for $200. I have no idea what happened to the trailer.

Selling

Postby Guy » Tue Mar 08, 2005 6:22 pm

Dear Steve,

Did you say you and Lisa were selling that boat and motor for $200? If so, I will take it.
Regards,

Guy

Absolutely! You were asking $500 for it a few months back and I couldn't believe no one bought it then.

Well good. I hope it goes to a good home. It derserves it.
