Started my diet today, already lost 100 lbs!

Postby Gerdo » Mon Aug 13, 2007 1:10 pm

Actualy I put my TD on a diet. I'm on a mission to cut the fat. Anything that is extra weight must go. First I removed the original battery tray, it was still under the newer tongue box. I also removed my rear 2" receiver for a bike rack that I never put on any more. Then came the fun. The supports for my "Basement" are built out of 2x4s and 2x3s. I drilled about 200 1.25" holes anywhere I could.

Why does anyone use 2x4's to build thier teardrops? That's not needed. Bigger is not always better. It's just heavier. Example: My Dalton (pictured below), I don't think there's a 2x4 in it, and it's not a bit flimsy.

By the way Gerdo, sure looks like a lot of work. But also looks like it is doing the job.

I could have and should have used 1x3s. I may someday rebuild these pieces. Of course I'll end up drilling holes in those too.

Won't be any problems running electrical

On a side note the house behind my tear in my avatar is the neighbors.
He's in the military headed overseas. He loaned me his garage to store my topless tear and Sat. AM I walked over and pulled it from his garage to my driveway ( about 40 yards) by hand. I am real happy with the weight and the balance. I have wrestled wheelbarows that were more trouble

I think his signature sums it up -- he built the first one like a tank. Probably happens a lot.

That's awesome! If you try to drop 100 pounds at a time, it seems difficult. If you drop a few ounces here and there it really adds up. Nice going.

Put some lightening holes in the tires too, those things are heavy! ;)

Steve
I've already put holes in the wheels and two big holes in each tire.

I think charred wood is even lighter than kiln dried.

I hope your not thinking that I should torch my TD!

I'm just trying to drop some weight. Even a little lighter will help with fuel mileage and ease going up the mountains.

Holey Cow!

I guess you could just weigh the sawdust to see what you have saved?

200 holes... Dang, what a lot of work! :o

HOLES!!!

Postby CASHCOW » Mon Aug 13, 2007 10:32 pm

Well... if you wanted to save some time, drill bits and elbow grease you could have gotten you a quart jar full of termites and just let them loose.....t  then when you thought you had enough holes, you could have been standing by with the spray can of bug killer......

I don't get it :? . Your drilling holes in wood not metal and are compromising the integrity of each board. Would you use termite infested wood? It's better to use 1x material than hack at 2x4's. Just think of all those crawly things you just made a home for.:D Danny
