wow, I just read 53 pages in one thread....I have gotten lots of ideas from your build. Not quite what I am looking to build but love the shower setup and might try to find a way to use it. About your A/C, unless you are in a very dry climate you should see some water coming from it, my 5200 BTU A/C sits in a window that has some roof underneath and any day over 28C (maybe 90 or so) it has a very visible wet stream under it. Thanks for all of the ideas and I can't wait for your page to be up.

Is there a way to attach a hose or something to direct the water out the bottom without having it collect on the wood? I'm thinking of using Steve's idea, but I don't want to cut a huge hole in the bottom. I thought a simple hose-hole might be enough.

drain

Postby Rebel » Sat Aug 25, 2007 5:00 pm

My wife and I were just talking about using a shower pan (maybe a 24 x 32) that would be dropped to the floor when showering, and stored vertically against the outside wall when not in use- the drain passing thru a hole in the floor. We are looking hard at a modified puffin - the one with the counter all the way cross the front end. The sink would be in the area of the counter next to the far outside wall. The sink drain would take advantage of the same drain for the shower with under the floor drainline. The porti-potti would store under the counter and installed on a wheeled stand that would roll out when needed...potti chair facing the exterior door wall.

This arrangement would give us more floor space, and still be able to use the harbor freight trailer which we already have. We are extending the trailer a few inches to give us at least a 54" wide bed. The extension would be curved out and up from the standard floor using Steves idea of plywood cutouts to curve the plywood.

The dinnette would be converted into the bed with the seats extended toward the front end of the trailer to make the bed. When not needing the bed, the extension would be stored under one of the dinette seats to again give us more floor space when not sleeping.

Here is a link to the project described: http://www.poplarcreek.net/project/

jml79 - I like my shower setup because I know I'll always have access to a shower. I use the camp showers when I can, but when they're full, funky, or when I just don't feel like leaving the camper it's nice to have a private shower. As for the AC, I'm not sure why I don't have any condensation water - I've never seen any, but the AC cools fine. I anticipate I'll be using the shower again this weekend (Labor Day) because of crowds.

Hudsonite - I'm not really sure what you mean by "collecting it on the wood?" My shower bottom has a small hole (the size of a hose) where the water drains to outside the camper.

Rebel - I like your idea of using the shower pan. The problems with shower pans are weight, cost, and cost. ;) I could live with the weight, but the cost is tough for me.

Sorry Steve, I was referring to the AC unit, not the shower. I was just trying to figure out how to direct any condensation by a hose rather than cutting a larger-than-needed hole. I think you answered my question in your case, since you don't see any condensation. Do you have a hose attached to you AC unit anyway? Or if there would be condensation, would it just drip to the ground because of the hole in the floor?

There is no hose attached to the AC unit. I made sure that when the trailer is level that the rear of the AC unit is tilted down so that it would drain. I'm at a loss as to why there never is any water - that's the reason I cut the big hole out under the unit. :?

If it ever decides to drip, then it will have a big enough opening to do so. :D

I have a "Puffin for Four" build in progress. I just picked up a Goldstar 5050 BTU air conditioner for $70 that has provisions for a drain hose.

For the showe pan, I'm using a utility sink I bought at Home Depot for $30. It measures roughly 19" x 21".

Let's see some pictures!

Good idea using the sink for a shower pan.

Steve, guys you can get pvc shower pan liner that goes together with pvc cement. Doesn't cost too much and the weight isn't bad either. You can also cut it down to fit.

Tile suppliers should have shower pan material. I used it in my house for a shower and an outside deck...though we mudded on top of it...then tiled on top of the dried cement.

Here's a pic of the shower-pan-to-be. I'll cut the "walls" down a little more before installation.

I've added pictures of my build thus far to my Album if anyone is interested. Floor is basically done (except for undercoating). Working on the walls now.

You can check at the big box stores. The one I saw was at Sutherlands in Joplin MO. Came in a kit but you can buy it off the roll too.

Hijack over.
