paint on alum frame windows

Postby dewayne » Wed Aug 22, 2007 8:02 am

Hy to all.

Can or has anyone had any luck painting the frames of these windows ?
Say from white to black and getting the paint to adhere to the frames and last.
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
dewayne

dewayne,
Doug Hodder painted his on his new TD. They look really good, so I'm sure he could give you some good tips.
To paint on aluminum, the aluminum has to be treated. I forget some of the product names that have been suggested, but if you do a search of painting aluminum you will find them.

Dewayne,
Two options that I've done on aluminum storefront...
1. Painted using BullDog adhesion promoter underneath paint.
2. Powder coated. (You'll need to remove the glass)

...scuff it with a scuff pad (3Mcleaning pad red/green) or extremely fine sandpaper(whether painted or bare metal)...use BullDog or an acid etch primer made for AL(both can be sued over paint), both should be available at an auto paint supply house...paint...see it's simple...isn't it.......

Sandblasted mine (removed glass first...) then painted with rust-oleum hammered metal paint.

No adhesion issues.

My windows came with a flat white finish. I just cleaned them good with paint thinner, then sprayed on some green Rustoleum (one year ago). So far, so good.

I've painted a couple of sets of windows...they were mill finish however, Grants 12x18 and 15x18 crank outs, but I'd imagine that the same technique can be used on a powder coated one, as long as the frame was done correctly in the first place. I just scuffed them up really well with a scotch brite, wiped them down with a degreaser, primed and painted them. I've done them out of a spray can, and with base/clear. Something that I think really adds to the look is to radius the corners on them, and a contrasting screw, pan head. I didn't take them apart...just did a meticulous job of taping them up. Worked for me. Doug

Its a good thing we don't seem to all get together at the same time!
I'd have to go to the bank and float a loan. Idea , go to motel and let kids stay in house but then again We might not house to come back to

I found me some black radius windows yesterday afternoon, so now I don't have to worry about painting. :D

If there is already paint on them, you can just sand them lightly until they are no longer shiny, clean them with a degreaser of some type (like laquer thinner) and paint them. The paint that is on them has stayed on, the new paint should also. If you sand through the paint, you should prime the metal first.

If you think there is wax on them, you should remove that first. Laquer thinner should work. Otherwise you may sand the wax into the old paint.
