Mac G5 Trouble

Mac G5 Trouble

Postby robfisher » Tue Aug 21, 2007 11:25 pm

My G5 crashed! Just stopped working and would not restart. Tech says I need a new mother... I like the mom that raised me but that's another story.

Does anybody know if this is a known problem with early G5's? They want $729 to fix it. Is the thing going to start giving me more problems? Just wondering what to do.

Sorry to hear about the G5. I have a question before you shuck out $729 to fix it. Did you or anyone push the little reset button on the logic board. The reason I ask you this is that I am a Apple Tech have been since 1988 and many times (not always) the only thing that is wrong when an apple will not start is the reset button got tripped. Look inside your G5 on your logic bd it is a very tiny Grey button. Apple built this in to protect the board. Try pushing the button with the power cable unplugged then try restarting your computer. If this does not work plug in the power cord push the button and then try restarting the your computer. Another question when you say just stopped working does this mean no power, no lights or exactly what does the G5 do. Where do you live, what state? Wondering if there is anything I could do for you. Let me know.

Did you try to reboot it off of the system DVD/CD or an external drive?

Is it doing ANYTHING?

As a rule, hardware wise, they usually don't give you trouble because it's more controlled manufacturing, as opposed to so many different companies making PCs.

But crap happens.

Hey, hey, hey, kiddies! Don't go making fun because a Mac died  . Y'all are missing the point, it's so unusual, it deserves it's own thread! :applause:

so it cost $729 to repair and you get a "new" old computer, or you buy a new I-mac which is likely more powerful for $1200 (lowest cost unit on Apple.com). with a new motherboard, how long before the hardrive gives out? does the current machine have enought ram?

How old is the G5? Can you reuse you peripherals? Will your software run on a new machine? are you looking into new software that will require more machine?

If it was me, I'd rather have a new machine which is good for another 3-5 years and has a warranty.

I think that logic applies to almost all computers. If you like to tinker around, you can prolly find another one in some state of disrepair to make one good one.

He has a G5. And even if it's a first generation G5, these are not issues.

Thanks for all the advice. Not in any order but...

Ira, we tried rebooting, unsuccessfully.
The G5 is three years old.

I'm in Idaho, we don't really have a Mac store so I took it to the authorized dealer, CompUSA. I assume if they are authorized they are supposed to know.

On restarting all I get is the start button flashing three times, pause, three times, pause....

Mark, More Machine?!!! Is there more machine? Certianly not within my budget. It's got enough Ram to run several small countries.

15 Pound anchor? You probably have never picked up a G5 Have you, Bobgorilla?

Chell, thanks for the heads up on the reset. I missed it. I'll see if that works but I wouldn't think two different Mac techs would miss that.

Thanks again for the advice

Three flashes is a memory error. Usually means your ram is loose or bad. Try pulling your ram and reinstalling it. If that doesn't work replace that before you replace anything else. Not sure about your Compusa but ours in Michigan is horrible and I wouldn't take anything to "ours" but then they closed "ours" too so we don't have one anymore. Let me know if that works or not.
