What would you take on the road?

I have to agree with Rap, for a six month sojourn, guns and money are a good start. I'd also take copious quantities of alcohol for bartering with the indigenous peoples for other goods and supplies. 8)

 8) Lynn take what you use for breakfast, lunch, dinner, bed and shower time. And at least one Dutch Oven. ;)

A good first aid kit with burn cream (the good kind).

Then take a credit card that is covered for loss and ID theft. That should get you cause they aren't going to send you to the desert.

Office: puter, paper, puter paper, ink, puter, red pencils and.... :)

As much stuff as my wife packs for the weekend, if I told her we were going for six months I would need to buy a semi-truck!

Ah, that might be my problem.

I'm thinking food would need to be resupplied every three days for freshness and storage space. Laundry is a question, just how often would I need to go and do I need to schedule down days in order to do laundry. I was happy to see a washer and dryer at Fort Clinch, I can't recall if Annastasia has them or not. Anyway, that's some of what needs to go into my thinking.

Lynn,
I say do a week trial get away and go from there...
My hunch is that going with a list out of the gate, you'll tend to take too much...
You'll get a feel for other things as well, like how often ice needs to be refurbished, food replaced and laundry stops... etc.

Hi Dean,

Now that you mention it. Paul and I are going for a week next month.

With each trip I've found a few things I'd like to add or adjust to our design. For example; we're looking at putting in these mini side tables that will fold down to be a table and fold up against the wall during the night. Anyway, the journey continues.

Lynn:

Speaking of ice... or your cooler temp.
I really like the idea of knowing what temp my ice chest is at, so the
inexpensive indoor outdoor temp reading is one way to know if your
food is at a safe temperature.

Here is a link to what I am now doing so ice panic don't set in,
by buying more than I need. Or making a trip for ice when I don't need to.

Nice tip and nice test. I'll show it to Paul, I think we might be investing in that. Is Reflectix the same as the shiny sun blockers we use to keep the cab of the truck cooler for the puppy?

The short answer....

Yes to the car window sun block = Reflectix with sewed edges for nice nice
look.

That is where I got the idea that the Reflectix would work as well as the Burningman test.

Lynn... I have yet to test the cooler in the high 90's temps but it should hold
uP quite well. uPdates will follow as tests proceed.

One very important thing to bring along with you would be a "sense of humor" because living in tight quarters for an extended period of time with anyone else (spouse, significant other, even just yourself) could lead to some tense moments, frustrations and cabin fever.

 Absolutely, I couldn't agree more.

Paul and I have settled on a one month test period in 2009. 2008 is too soon for his job to plan a one month vacation. We're currently trying to decide how far to go. One week or a portion of one week will be in South Florida to visit with the grandchildren. Apart from that, we're in the search mode of good economical places to go.

We both have a healthy interest in historical areas, actually if we find one and I do some research for a book, we can use part of the trip as a tax right off. :)

I started out with an 10 pound block of ice and a 2 pound block of dry ice
,
nestled uP against each other so the dry ice would keep the block frozen. I
then took scrap pieces of Reflectix and put it around the two cool sources
to keep food containers from resting uP against them. I also put yet one
more piece of the Reflectix
on top of the cooler contents to keep the cool in
when I opened the top uP.

So did ya have any room left in there to actually put some food in to see if it stayed cold????
You'd never get Ira to do that, there's probably enough room for another 6er of Bud without all the insulation! 8)
