Pimping Up The Tracker

Postby Ira » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:36 am

I just ordered the hitch for my Tracker, and I want to add this:

To this:

I gotta make this vehicle more manly. Otherwise, I'm gonna have to paint it pink and give it to my wife. (This car does make me look taller, though.)

The cargo carrier is 20" by 60", either including the edge lips or not--because as you know, HF doesn't go into much detail when it comes to specs. (Especially when those specs are coming from China.)

What I want to do is permanently or semi-permanently assemble an ass box to it. (Since it's at the rear of the vehicle, I won't call it a tongue.) The Tracker has zero trunk/storage space, so I figured this would be nice to have.

So I just got the idea of using a cooler for this purpose, with some kind of a jerry-rigged lock, because this would give me the option of also USING it as a cooler. (The carrier has a 500lb. capacity, which is plenty.)

But can you guys think of any other sources for suitable boxes for this? Forget diamond plate--too much gelt. Also, I want to be able to easily install and remove the entire assembly from the hitch.

Walmart in the automotive section has bins for the back of trucks. I have one I keep all my dirt motorcycle stuff in so it is all together and I can just throw it in and run. Water-proof and pretty light. I just went and measured mine and the base will fit on a 20" platform. Built in the USA.

About how long is yours?

That sounds perfect, and I may have still enough room to attach a small smokey mountain grill to the carrier too. (Rod holders are getting attached to the sides of the bumper.)

I was first looking in the below direction, but if yours has the right dimensions, I can certainly fit a sufficient cooler into that band, and get that functionality out if it when needed.

The very bottom measures 19" and there are four feet type deals that you could use to attach to the rack. Plus has a place to put on a paddle lock. Been beating mine up for about a year now and it works great.

I've seen that box at WM, next to the truck boxes, but never paid attention cause I didn't need it. It's not on their web site, though.

The only consideration is which carrier to get, because with that lip on the carrier, the box may go too close to the car door to open. (And yeah, I know I won't be able to open the rear door.)

But while I was surfing WM, I found THIS:

A pop-up house for 150 bucks. Has anyone ever posted about this before?

I was bored and put on my rack and put the box on it and it was fine. My rack is different than the one you are talking about getting, but I would think the carrier you are looking at would be alright...the start of the basket will be more than 2-3" away from the back of your Tracker.

hi ira,

for more room, have you considered removing the back seat? that's what i did in my jeep, and it made a lot more space.

I would have to go back in time and eliminate the kids.

As a matter of fact, if I did that and also eliminated the WIFE, I would have TONS of room and wouldn't need the carrier.

Something you might want to consider....the rack may have a 500# capacity but I doubt your little car has a tongue weight capacity of 500# and that's what anything on that should be considered. Also the fact that you are loading waaay behind the axle doesn't help either...the more you've got back there the lighter your front end will be.
Oh, and don't hide your tailights or license plate either. 8)

Use caution glasshoppa. :R

PS if ya want it manly paint it flat black with spray bombs then take it out in the swamp and rub the sides of it up against some trees a few times. Then maybe it'll look tough, well, maybe not but it would be fun anyway.

Yup, adding lots of extra weight back there is an excellent way of making your Tracker really unstable......

In this country, Suzuki rate the Samurai (=Tracker) as capable of carrying a 50kg hitch weight - that's 110 pounds.

Yeah, but he could pull some cool wheelies!

BTW, Ira, I have one of those cargo thingies. It is proped against my dad's garage in Houston, if you want it. ;)

And, first step to manliness is to remove the ghey-looking blue "Tracker" sticker on the side. That would be a huge improvement in masculinity.

Get the tires fliped blackwall side out, too. Cheap way to improve manliness.

A winch on the front would add some testoterone to the Tracker, don't you think?
