Staining a fence with a sprayer..

Postby Ken A Hood » Mon Aug 27, 2007 8:51 pm

I've got to stain a fence, and was thinking of using a Wagner Wideshot Power Painter, until I saw a Wagner Paint Crew 770 [looks to be easier to use, longer hose larger hopper]. I'm assuming if it'll spray paint (oil/latex) it'll be no problem spraying a stain.

I've heard good/bad things about both...mostly about getting the units clean

Anyone use either? I'm leaning towards the Paint Crew 770...

We tried that once.

It stained the fence just fine, and our legs, arms, hands, clothes, and everything else that was within reach of the overspray. Massive overspray. Huge, prodigious overspray. Overspray that somehow drifted upwind as well as down. I am sure it landed on people and pets and cars half a mile away. And it still clogged up the sprayer horribly.

If I had to do it over again and I decided for some reason to keep the wooden fence instead of building a nice block wall, I think I would have used a paint roller.

Ken... I think for a little bit more money you can get a lot better sprayer: Wagner-Spraytech 1420 Airless Paint Sprayer
I've had one about 5 years and painted 6 houses and a bunch of fence with it. As with any airless, you get some spray that could drift on a windy day, but not much. That's the good thing about "airless"... It just pumps paint (or stain), no air like a compressor type sprayer. This is a handy little sprayer for the money. I paid about $300., but they are somewhat cheaper now: http://tinyurl.com/2kvrge

I also have a big honkin Binks Superbee airless I seldom use any more since I got the small one. I've had it since 1975 and it still works fine after thousands of gallons of paint. It's just a monster to haul around.

Save your money and buy a cheap 2 gallon pump up sprayer. That worked great for us.

Why not see if you can rent one for the day. Check with the local rental shop and see what they offer.

I looked at renting one, went to HD and was told there for indoors only....
Plus by the time I figure out how to set it up and use it I could be painting! (staining)

I think I'm going to go get a cheap deck sprayer...and a few cheap foam brushes. Would a foam roller work too? Just to even out what I'm spraying, it's a solid stain.

I tried to spray stain my fence and wasted too much in the process from the wind. I just screwed a 3" brush on a pole and dipped and brushed, no bending over & a much finer job too. :D Danny

Ditto, I've used a pump up sprayer several times with stains, works great and cheap.

Ditto. I have seen a lot of fences stained with basic Hudson pump sprayers.

Years ago, when I was dumb and young, I wanted to paint an old washing machine with a sprayer of some kind. No spray cans had been invented yet, so I dug out the old continuous Hudson bug sprayer, the kind that you hold the metal cylinder in one hand and pump air into it with the other. Problem was, the original glass container for the paint was missing so I simply replaced it with a 1 qt canning jar.

When I pumped it up, good and hard, the continuous spraying began and the canning jar exploded. Flying glass cut the back of my hand so bad that I had to go to the Dr for stitches. Later I sold the washing machine for exactly what the Dr bill was. Just my story, enjoy you spraying experience, no matter what mode you choose.

Hey Roly,

That has to be among the most hilarious posts on this forum especially since you lived through it. Still trying to picture it.
