Trailer wireing on a new Beetle

Postby dwe » Wed Aug 29, 2007 8:44 pm

We have a new beetle 06 that has LED tail lights. The dealer will not put a wire harnes on because they say it will mess up the computer in the car. I can't believe trailer lights can't be hooked up.

Please help
thanks

dwe, there are talilight conveters that draw power directly from the battery...they should be available from any supply house(internet or otherwise) that sell conveters............

hello dwe!

do you have a pic of your beetle's hitch? i'm wanna put one on my '99 tdi. advanced auto said the could order me one, but i was a little shocked at the $200 price... :o

where did you get your hitch? what part of Wisconsin are you from? I'm from Reedsville (between Appleton and Two Rivers), but travel all over the state (and North America) for work...

i look forward to your reply.

I would buy the one from Hidden Hitch - I have one of those on my Mazda Protege 5 and it's really a quality piece

I tow with my 2001 Beetle. I had trouble finding a hitch also. But ended up getting one from u-haul. It cost me about $165 i think. Give or take. It came with EVERYTHING i needed though even the drop i think also the ball. I put it on myself. It was easy. But you do drill holes in the spare tire area. I had U-Haul hook up the tail lights after going crazy trying to figure it out on my own. The lights only took them an hour or so to do. That cost me about $60. But they mounted the plug inside my trunk. So i have the wires hanging out of the rear hatch when i tow. Kinda sucks.

Manual Turn Signals

Hi all
I built this while I was waiting for my isolator to arrive that I bought on EBay .

I designed the more complicated circuit first . I actually built it and it wouldn't fit in to the plastic box that I had for it . I then built the second , simpler circuit and a wooden box for it . The second design requires more manual dexterity but is simple and east to get used to . You mimic the turn signals with the push buttons and you hold one side down and cycle the other side to mimic a brake signal and turn signal together . The more complicated first circuit uses a flasher and turns off the brake circuit automatically using the relays . There is a manual brake light push button switch on the complicated design . My unit plugs in to the cigarette lighter socket for a strong source of fused power that is not hooked up to any sensors to screw up the system . I built the cord long enough to use with my car and my pickup . Both vehicles have easy access through the body to the rear so there is no problem routing and removing the wires . There is a separate switch for the running lights .

I thought that this unit might be useful for others on this site . If you have a standard transmission your right hand could get a little busy . ....................................... D.J.

Why didn't you just use power to led taillights to operate relay(s) once you can get relay to "follow" stop/turn lamps you can duplicate function on trailer by just putting 12 volts through relay contacts to trailer lamps....

Relays are relative low current and should not effect "other" car systems....
