sheet metal

Postby starleen2 » Wed Aug 29, 2007 10:14 pm

In need of some help so why not ask: I’m looking for a supplier of sheet metal (thin / light gauge) either galvanized or aluminum in the East Texas area - 4 X 8 sheets are preferable. We live in Carthage, Texas - any suggestions??

You might check with a tractor / trailer repair shop. I think Lufkin is where trailers are made maybe get some scrap or seconds cheap. Also check the scrap metal salvage yards.

There is someone a while back that had a supplier in your area but I cannot remember maybe Sonetpro or others can help.

I'm using 24 gage steel sheets myself 48" x 120". It is on the heavy side but using SIP type construction.

A picture of the front right lower corner of my trailer below.

A little fuzzy but maybe you can make it out. Yep the floor is two layers of 1 5/8" rigid poly insulation board Gorillia Glued to the frame work and inside the boxed frame is bottom of 1/4" exterior grade plywood in the wood frame ( also glued ). Another 1 5/8" rigid poly insulation board will be added before the final floor is placed ( lots of thin layers of Gorilla Glue on everything in this thing ). The sheets of steel are just hung in the picture but will be taken down and insulation board will be glued to the steel skin ( again Gorilla Glue ) then all glued to the frame and attached with SS screws ( $100 of SS screws 20#).

If you have a Mueller Metal Buildings nearby, they sell Gal. Sheet and may be able to point you towards an Al supplier nearby.

I ordered mine from http://www.saf.com/ They are in Atlanta, If you order 100 lbs or more they will ship it free. They also have almost any extrusion you will need. They ship the extrusions in 16' lengths so you won't have any seams.
I ordered mine on Thursday and recieved it on the following Tuesday.
I was very happy with their service.

Thanks for the info. It turns out that there are two Mueller Metal Building suppliers in our area (Lufkin and Kilgore) both are in reasonable driving distances.
