Interesting! As you know, a lot of stuff is being copied by the China manufacturers. When they make sand cast mold from an original for casting iron the result is always going to come out smaller. Cast iron shrinks when it comes out of the mold quite a bit. Quality manufacturers of iron know this and take it into account when making the plugs to cast from. I've run into this withn other cast iron bits from China. There are a lot of old Stanley/Bailey wood plane fakes out there too since they have become so collectable.

I'm not one of the folks bidding up old waffle irons on eBay. Last evening I bought a cast iron waffle maker for $18.99 by Rome Industries from Amazon.com. The Amazon.com user reviews are positive. I'll share my impression once it's delivered and tested out.

These are good waffle irons for teardropping and light camping. Mine is the same one you bought and I've used it several times now with very good results.

That one looks very familiar. I think I've seen similar ones at Marriott Courtyard. The waffles are very nicely done but the cooking spray is usually hidden away. Sometimes they get a little sticky if the spray isn't used enough.

That's seems like a good price for a Pro unit.

Any idea how many waffles you could produce with a deep cycle battery (type 27 I think) and inverter?
(Its an honest question...I'm totaly dumb when it comes to turning 12V to 110 or vice versa).

If the electric waffle iron is 1200 watts that would need 100 amps from your battery. That high a draw rate would suck the battery flat in less than 10 minutes, even though the battery has a theoretical capacity of around 100 amp hours. It would recover partially after a while and give you a bit more. Even if you're using very expensive AGM batteries you shouldn't draw at more than 25% of their amp hour capacity. Ideally you want to discharge at less than 10% of the capacity. Deep cycle batteries are rated based on a constant discharge over 20 hours.

On to the general subject of stovetop waffle irons- I WANT ONE! Just got home from a great trip where I made about 1000 sourdough pancakes. Next time I'd like to do waffles.
