Wall question

Postby jamesm » Mon Sep 03, 2007 5:22 pm

Hi everyone I am planning how to make my walls. I have a lot of 1x2 lumber so I want to use that to frame the walls. I am thinking about using the 1/4" birch from HD as the exterior skin. Would this work? I do not see where it says it is exterior grade...so should I use it? I could use the luan they have instead My floor is 10'-0"x4'-6" so I will need to figure out how to mate up the but joint on the exterior wall. Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks
James

HD doesn't have the best quality ply but I suppose it would be ok and the ply doesn't need to be exterior grade. If you are making a woody, epoxying it and a top coat of clear coat preserves the wood.

As far as joining ply together, check out Steve Frederick's build journals for tips.

Thanks Ed I will look into that journal. I really just want to paint the TD so I guess I don't even need the birch.

James....I'd avoid the Home Depot chinese ply. Lots of voids and really poor quality. I leaned the hard way and created a lot of extra work for myself while attempting to save a buck. Just my experience with it. Doug

I used the same 1/4 " birch for my roof. It worked out great!! Just remember to epoxy then paint. The epoxy will penetrate better and make your plywood much more resistant to the elements. You'll be happier in the long run! :D

Take a look at CPES™(Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer)
from http://www.rotdoctor.com/products/product.html
two or three coats then prime and pant.
