I’m just curious about firearms and camping

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

I hope this isnt a high-jack, a bit of a twist though,,, I was able to shoot on of these recently,,, for snakes, to large kritters and personal protection it sure is a dandy multi purpose hand gun,,

Sorry if this is considered a hijack,,

DAYUM Chip...I LIKE THAT...for most of my usage, that would be an ideal choice...killing poisonous snakes being one of the biggest usages I have for a weapon and it would make an excellent "bedroom" gun to boot.......

Chip that is nice!!! I like it!!! I have for a long time been wanting a 45/410 double barrel derringer but ummmmm I like that one too. I wonder what the kick is like with a 410 slug?
End of high jack>>>>
I too carry a firearm in my camper. There has been a couple time I came across some very questionable characters, I kept my gun very handy.

Wow, You Guys, I'm really supprised at how many of us there are out there. I was thinking I may be the only one. and allways felt a bit strange about it.
Why is that I ussually only "carry" when I'm in my TTT, not so much when I'm in the full sized camper? Is it because I feel a bit more vulnerable in such a small space? When we go out in the bigger camper I feel like I can jump out of bed and grab a big kitchen knife or something else for protection from "questionable characters"

I just love that 410 revolver.
That could be the ultimate "camp firearm"
I have the 12 gauge pump "Police Special" with the pistol grips at home 'just in case'

I too... have enjoyed Chips entry of the Taurus .45/.410 pistol :)

Can't help but wonder how the Uripeans are digesting these last few posts.

After reading this
self-defense...
Taurus .45 colt/.410 pistol Thread
on a gun forum. It appears some
success is had with accuracy with the .45 with some cartridge manipulation
and load changes. But as far as bedside manners ... they all seem to like the
410 with larger shot ... NOT slugs. Seems the kick is manageable as well.

Guess, the MadOne could at least stop snakes, Texicans and Yankees
from invasion of his domain with one of uM.

Hey Rocky! You are sure right about the shooting ranges. The do a heck of a business here! Not just full autos either, but a lot of the other military guns. It's big tourist business. It's funny to see a taxi full of Japanese climb out all excited about getting the chance to go shooting. I've yet to see someone who fired one that didn't walk out of there without a huge grin on their face! Most of them take their targets home with them too.

Forunately since I work for a law enforcement agency, I get a discount for range time.

Shot guns make for nice marriage vows, however, I do not carry or own a hand gun. Now don’t go liberal on me! I spent time in the marine corps and can shoot with the best of em’. Most places do not allow hand guns of any sort and sometimes they just escalate arguments into violent shootings – just my opinion. I just prefer to use my hands to choke the life out. Nothing sweeter than Hand to hand. (man, I really need counseling). Should I ever need a gun, I’ll go to one of my friends who always seem to have two or three lying around and let them take care of business. But seriously –in twenty years I have never needed to carry any weapon nor had the need arisen for protection or defense and I have been to plenty of places. I just prefer to not carry or own one, but not to infringe on any persons right to bear. But be warned - give me the trusty ole mace and chain and I’m a kill’n machine.

Gadgetman I am fairly certain that there are more like you than you might guess, there is nothing strange about wanting to protect your loved ones from harm. Regardless of what others may say, we don't live in a safe and perfect world .I'm happy for those who feel so safe in their campgrounds ,however they have probably never had to scare off a pack of coyotes away from their family dog,or been awakened along with their wife by a small group of strangers in and around their isolated camp at 3:00 in the morning. Years ago when I lived in Washington State ,"Travel and Protection" was a legitimate reason on a concealed weapons permit application to be granted one. Those who would belittle you for your choice have their opinion, you were meant to have the right. Lock it up,keep it safe, obey the law, join a sportsman club ,practice with it regularly and enjoy the piece of mind to travel off the beaten path and go down paths seldom traveled.

oh my.
I'm a five foot tall woman. In the 80s, weighing a whopping 130 lbs., I used to medic arena concerts and sporting events at a 50,000 seat domed stadium, and manage scene control at multi-department fires. Medics aren't allowed to carry anything except sick people, stair chairs, O2 cannisters, flashlights, a medic case and their brains. Not that a medic case can't help a girl clear a path through a crowd, but bandage scissors don't usually make 'weapon of choice' lists. I never even carried mace, and I didn't even have a D-cell MAG light for the first five or six years as a medic.

I used to camp in unimproved remote (free) NYS national forest camping areas. With a tarp, or in a two person pup tent, because that was 'ultralight' in the 70s. I camped alone, or with a dog, in the Adirondacks, in Pennsylvania and all around NY state. In the 80s when my nephews got to be three and six, I then started taking two little kids and five dogs camping. Still in a tent, although I'd moved up to a small dome tent by then. No cell phones back then--at least, nothing I could afford-- although I did have a CB radio in the truck for awhile. Now I mainly camp in campgrounds, but I still camp alone or with a couple of dogs who, together, weigh a whopping 50 lbs...and one of them is 13 and not exactly in the running for defender of the year.

In no camping experience in the last 35 years, remote area or state campground, have I ever encountered a situation involving people (far and away the most dangerous critter in the woods IMO), wild animals, poisonous snakes or personal danger that would make me feel like I needed any weapon besides the ones I was born with.

I suppose if I was at risk from wild animals or planning an extended stay in a dangerous location, a weapon *might* make the camping list. But in a campground? In a relatively populated area? When I started going camping, I lived in an 'urban redevelopment' area. I went camping to get AWAY from the imminent need to defend myself that was presented at every overgrown hedge and abandoned garage. And heck, the only gun I ever owned in that house in 13 years was the starter pistol I used when starting the dogs on bird work...

Guess it's just a miracle that I've managed to survive all these years of camping armed only with a swiss army knife, a flashlight, some matches and my brain. 'Cause it sure isn't my size and physical conditioning that's been keeping trouble under control all these years...

I only "pack" when I'm off by myself up in the woods....had an incident when the dog was flipping out in the tent tent trailer up in Co. ....I thought she was nuts, I went outside to "wizz" and hit a bear in the behind with the door on the trailer...I kinda wish I had some backup at the time...but didn't need it as it took off running....kinda restless for the rest of the night however. doug

I obviously carry most of the time, how ever I have never had to pull a handgun in self defence, close but never,,,,,, its kinds like a spare tire, jack, first aid kit, duct tape,,,,, they are there for emergency use only,,, ya hope ya will never need it, but have ya ever had a flat tire and no spare,,, sure is a bad feeling,,,

I grew up in rural areas and started shooting at an early age,,,but only with proper supervision, handguns are no toy, they have got to be respected, and handled by sober, responsible mature people

thank goodness its still a choice and not a government mandated ban,

happy shooting,,
