One possible soulution for those concerned about personal safety would be to carry a can of bear spray. If it will send a 2,000 lb. grizzley running, I would thing it would stop any human attacker without permanent damage. Even in bear country I know there can be serious consequences for shooting a bear, even in self defense.
All that being said. Last night in Fort Wayne someone attempted to rob a video store. The guy behind the counter shot and killed the would be robber.![]()

I would imagine that the next criminal will think twice before entering that store.
