ok, it's been 11 whole days since your last post...

are you done yet?

I can't wait to see this finished. I have bee showing pictures to my wife back at Fort Drum and she likes the every rounded, truely teardrop shaped ones... I do to... BUT... I really like your build and it would look damn good behind my 4x4 Ram.

Steve, I wonder about the outside expansions you added to the base rails of the trailer and if they are really necessary. Since you have a 2x2 rails for the platform of your floor with 3/4" plywood, do you think you needed the outside rails for support?

I dont get much time to work on it but I do have a wall framed, the rear bulk head cut and ready to frame and the wheel arches cut out of the walls. Tomorrow I'm off to get the insulation (its a 110km round trip :( ) so I'll take some more pictures then :)

The floor is 12mm, so 1/2". I dont really need the outside angle to support the floor it is more to protect it should I drag it in a rut or come down on a rock or log. It also give me steel to jack the trailer up on if needed. Basically it is protection for the base of the walls and one reason I wont be running the walls over the side of the frame :)

Got some more done today. I'm having real problems getting 19mm insulation, cant seem to find it anywhere. I did luck on to a window for the front though. Its a Camec tinted perspex window (the bubble type, got it cheap as it had been ordered as a replacement but never picked up. It's 1140mm wide and 410 high, perfect really :)

Anyway, I put u a wall to confrim where the interior cupboard framing should go. Here's some pics before I added it. The rear bulkhead slots in between two uprights and takes a whack to get it in so it's nice and tight and even without the framing on the bulkhead it's all freestanding at this point.

Also cut the door with a jigsaw using the framing as a guide.

Water Tank

Postby jml79 » Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:01 pm

I love the design, anyhow in a few homebuilt boats I have sailed and worked on we built water tanks out of plywood covered in fibreglass (epoxy resin only). But anything like a water tank or a fuel tank hanging down would be subject to damage off road.

Did a little more, things move slowly, or at least look that way. I've done some tests on floor strength etc in preparation for mounting the spare, it's pretty heavy.

The frame at the base of the rear bulkhead screws through the floor and into a second piece underneath to stop the floor from flexing. I'll be adding a second piece underneath the other side of the tyre winch and will then mount a piece of angle where my temporary piece is and extended it out to the second set of bolts and across to the area where the second underfloor strengthener will go.

With all this the floor can take my 25kg spare :) and not flex or rip apart. Anyway, here's some pics of where it is so far. It shows the temporary steel as a test of it's impact on floor strength.

Base of rear bulkhead, sleeping area side.

Base of rear bulkhead, kitchen side, with test steel piece prior to proper angle and extension to pickup second set of bolts.

And underneath, you can see the chain winch hanging through the spare. I'll also be adding some more frame under here to pull the tyre up against. The unpainted piece is right below the bulkhead and is screwed into by the lower bulkhead framing.

Winch

The winch handle will extend all the way out the side of the frame with a sunken bolt head that is the same size as the stabilizer winders so I can use the same handle to raise and lower the tyre as the legs :)
