Drive Inn Movie Theaters or Restaurants

Postby Classic Finn » Wed Sep 12, 2007 8:18 am

I didnt want to hijack Dougs Thread on Cool Fabric but the Drive Inn word came up and thought to ask if there are any Drive Inn Theatres still around in the States or Drive Inn Restaurants?

Wondering if anyone has kept that Ol Nostalgia Alive Anywhere?

Heikki-

We have 2 drive-inn movies within 20 miles of our house. :applause:

Each has 3 screens running with different movies and each movies' sound is supplied by tuning into a specific FM radio station!

We also have a great drive in diner right across the river, fish sandwiches are their speciality (I often wonder if the fish comes from the river?).

We don't have any "roller-hops" around us anymore.

Down in the more southern states there is a "Sonic" chain of drive-inn diners.

Cheers,

Coop

We have one here in Northern Minn. Of course it only operates in the summer. Also a unique food drive in that looks like two kegs standing side by side. Summer only.

Heikki,

When I lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina the was a Drive Inn Theater in a little town north of there called Mt. Airy. (Also Andy Griffith's Home town) Used to go up once a month and watch a move.

There is, or was, A Drive Inn theater in Blue Ridge Georgia.
It seems that they are a dying bread here, which is sad.

The Drive Inn Restaurant has made a comeback with the fast food chain "Sonic Drive In" http://www.sonicdrivein.com/index.jsp

Down town Atlanta has the Famous "Varsity Drive Inn" too. Gotta LOVE there Chilli Dogs!!!

We have one here in Butte. Love to take the kids on a warm summer night and let them lay in the grass under the screen to watch.

We actually have 2 that are somewhat close to us. One is a new one that was built in 2003. It is so busy they are adding 2 more screens. We go to this one a lot. Usually all family/kid friendly movies.

The other is in Door County and has been around for a long time.

Heikki

We have a Drive in Theater just down the road from us and we also have a locally owned Root Beer stand that still uses car hops.

Heikki,

The Drive Inn's are not a dying breed as I thought. They are around here though. None to be found around here, though. But its good to know they are keeping them alive in other areas of the country!!

Drive Inn's are fun. Instead of the using a speaker box, you can tune your car radio into a station that the DI broadcasts the audio on. Neat huh?

So, C'mon Lets Go!!!! :D :D :D

There is a drive-in theater well south of Dallas on !-45 that seems to do well. People apparently drive quite a distance for the nostalgia of it.

We have drive-in restaurants all over, if you count the Sonic chain. Some Sonic locations are more enthusiastic than others about the theme. I've even seen watresses on roller-skates at a few. Our Miata Club used to meet at one every Saturday evening.

There is a legendary place called Keller's Hamburgers in Dallas that is a magnet for old cars -- mostly fifties cars, hot rods, and sixties muscle cars. They actually serve beer, too, which is pretty weird for a drive-in.

The drive-in theaters are really rare, but it seems that a lot of towns/cities have drive-in restaurants. However, on a small percentage are used as social gathering places, like they were in the past.
